So I'm spending the long weekend in Taranaki on the farm and setting up an Apple TV for my brother and it's dog slow.

Some investigation shows both houses connect at about 7.6mb and there is a cabinet right near the houses, according to the old man a new cable of sorts was run to the cabinet recently I do recall the connection being closer to 2mb last year so I'm assuming the cabinet has had an upgrade.

So for a rural connection I was thinking 7.6mb is great and Apple TV / Netflix should work. Not so, browsing in General is very slow and streaming is out of the question. A speedtest from the house shows a connection anywhere between 0.9 and 1.2mb, nowhere near the connection speed.

Modem is an old telecom Thompson that only supports 802.11g so I'm replacing that, I don't think it's having any issues though. House has a master filter that was professionally installed.

So what is the likely reason for a good connection but slow throughput? Old cabinet with slow back haul? Any way to find out if it's scheduled for an upgrade (given the recent cable run).

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

 


 

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

 



 

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

Check modem xDSL line stats but good chance they are connected to a Conklin that only supports ADSL1 with 2 E1's for Back haul shared with all other users connected to the Conklin

Cable run could be a fibre run to the local school or hospital not to the Conklin

Thanks, I can see it's connected at g992.1 so adsl1... What's an e1 worth in throughput, 2mb or so?

Single E1 is just over 2Mbps and good chance it only has 2 or maybe max 4 but then that is shared with all users connected to that cabinet / conklin

Ouch, no wonder it's crawling.

Interestingly the school is closer to the main road than this house / cabinet so the cable upgrade wouldn't have been for that. I wonder if they are scheduled for some sort of back haul upgrade, apparently the conduit they were laying was bright green if that means anything (or is just the regular conduit they use all over).
