Nice photo!

your boring though, i woulda made a rock sculpture and left it to see how long a bite would take :3

I just got home now, would have seen a cairn, and straight on GZ to see how the culprit was :)

As for earth, battery not earthed, have thought about it.
The ground is real gnarly, just shingle packed together with glacial silt
I would not even consider bringing a digger in to do any work here unless it was 20tn
Cable from Grey pillar to modem is only 1m long so the lightning interference is coming in along the road.
All the village power is buried, very last pole before going underground is also where our transformer is, no idea about earthing at cabinet as it's just a grey box sitting on a concrete base, would love to see the connection credential of house behind the cabinet.
At our house I put in a 6.5m long galvanised rebar, down beside 2x concrete water tanks so buried 2.5m deep

I can live with Loss of signal resyncs, as long as my gear keeps working and not going up in smoke, as a DV120 did a few years back burnt out completely on inside, black mess

Well spotted, you must be staying in town for the holidays or camping with the hordes (well no so bad now) or on the Alps to Ocean ride ?
Yes its a spot we love, and having VDSL just cream ontop

Yeah the Alps 2 ocean. Ohau (Lake Middleton campsite) to Kurow today.

Have been pleasantly surprised how quiet things are, both on the trail and in the town's along the way

Between Xmas and last week up here was bedlam with people, the camp at middleton was chocka, Twizel was just manic, population 1200 normally 30,000 over new years
Quite a hike between Ohau and Omarama, people often don't realise its a 400m climb
Did keep a closer eye on the Battery box and solar panel, incase of unsavoury behaviour

Was having all sorts of issues with VDSL stability of late, went through a gazillion different possibilities of what could be causing the issues.
Decided it could be a number of things time for a big rearrange.

I've just now rewired the Line from Pillar to DV130 modem with CAT6 outdoor cable, still not ideal I need to find a RJ45 socket to RJ12 plug for a cleaner connection
Put on new Gel filled connectors
Inserted a 1amp Circuit breaker onto battery +ve terminal
No longer run power out of MPPT controller power out
No longer use the 12-24v DC-DC converter
POE injector also runs from circuit breaker directly
Radio now runs of 12v (was surprised it could)
Modem power also rewired out of circuit breaker direct

Everything is simplified and rewired
Currently line is stable and at full speed, best to leave it for a bit before I jump with joy.

Nice, those radios generally run OK on anything from around 10.5v to 26v or even a little higher if you want to push your luck, but 24v is ideal.

I think the newer radios are a little more fussy.

it's the modem that's likely a little more sensitive...

DV130s are meant to be pretty solid through it, but i've got one friend whos fried 4 of these in the last few months..

Lighting strike would take it out every time.

The DV130 has probably been the most stable
Not missed a beat, issues seems to be everything around it causing grief
No longer worry about lightning, the stats show some errors when its about, but nothing has broken in coming up 2 years

Back in the old days with modem in house, sure as mud as soon as lightning was about, something would get fried attached to modem
Used to unplug modem from wall at first sign of lightning

Had more issues, that were doing my head in
The Litebeam at road kept power cycling, usually when we were surfing
Couldn't work out why, 12-24v converter was reading 24v (at the time) when I checked on it, switched to 12v POE it still happened, bought another Litebeam and it still happened
Pulled everything apart again rechecked the 12-24v converter this morning and only showing battery voltage (12v)
I had already come to conclusion that the Litebeam does not like 12v POE under load
Replaced the 12-24v converter, and viola all is good again
Old one must have had an intermittent issue, ran at 24v sometimes and 12v at others (when I wasn't looking)

Kids are happy again they can geek without interruptions and I don't have to drive to end of drive with all my gear to tinker in the Battery/modem box every time checking on next issue

Hope this helps someone else looking at this

Alas we were part of the news thats been distracting folk from Politics these last few days
Our house was burned to the ground at Lake Ohau in the infamous fires
I can't confirm yet, but I've seen the road side gear still intact
Wasn't allowed out of car to check but I'm hopeful
Of course not much use without a house where the broadband was beamed to

But I hope to get to site to have a look through rubble for mementos and also check on the Battery/charger/modem/Radio gear.

The road side gear has been running great
Only issue has been the 12-24v DC-DC converter has twice died, but other than that
The longest run was about 7000 hours continuous running

Main thing is we are out safe and can replace things but not our lives
Looking at rebuilding and starting again in our corner of paradise.
I have cancelled Interweb account for now, not really needing it as will probably rent a long term house in Twizel while we rebuild
Twizel does now have Fibre which is nice.

Picture below is what's left, for those very observant they will notice a Ubiquiti Radio Metal dish lying in the rubble

Cheers guys for support, I'm over the grieving stage and looking forward to doing it all again
Yes the Give a little Page, I'm not into that sort of thing, fiercely independent, was sprung upon us by the overwhelming support others have shown, I'm completely blown away by it.
I by no means come here for anything other than my passion of best Interweb possible and willing to try different solutions to get there.

Over all any one looking at needing internet or anything else over a distance a setup like mine should be a consideration
Other than those DC-DC converters its run better than thought

But the future may bring 4g to the house (well it will till the house is rebuilt)
I had '4g' connection on iphone to the VF antenna right in the nook of the Vee where the garage and house meets by the kitchen
Was getting same performance as VDSL
Most of the house got no coverage at all except the kitchen which gets 4g
But with 2x teenage kids there is currently no plan that will allow for them
Should the plans get bigger may look at an antenna on the roof and beam in 4g, good to have options

I'll be back with how the Battery box, Solar panel and Radio survived

Another update
We've moved into new house, a copy of the previous
Its so good to be home again, still some bits to finish as everything is hard to get but we are in and super excited

Internet, last year some rotten buggers stole the battery box with battery from Solar panel
This then led me to trying 4g as main interweb as Ohau was on the list for a 4g tower, been talked about for years but all of a sudden it happened and it came in a flash
Put this in as part of the Insurance house rebuild, sparky installed a 8DBI DUAL POLARISED 698-960/1710-2700MHZ 3G/4G/LTE ANTENNA
Direct wired into my server/pump room (I know water and servers don't mix)
As I planned this all before the Tower was put in I had it pointed at 'Buscot' where Vodafone have their tower about 20km away
The new tower is 350m away and can be seen from Kitchen window but is in no way obtrusive

Now been playing with the 2x Towers (very LOTR-ish)
I know the new tower is 4g only as this was in the dialogue before it went up, am leaning this is using band 3
Buscot tower I'm leaning to using band 28
I have a Huawei B818-263 locked to Vodafone

Playing about if I
Force 4g to band 28 (700Mhz) I get a ping in the mid 50ms range and maxing out 100Mbps
Force 4g to band 3 (1800Mhz) I get a ping in the high 20ms range and maxing out at 140Mbps
Set the B818 to bands 3 and 28 I get '4g+' and fastest speeds I've had, ping in mid 30's and up to 204Mbps, below picture says B3 only but if I set it B3 only there's no '4g+' and slower speeds so must be grabbibg data from band 28 too

Upload speeds look locked at 30Mbps, as this never changes no matter what I do
Quite chuffed was expecting 100Mbps

I'll get some pics up, currently got Covid so got a few days at home coming up
