I'm hoping with fibre an ISP change would require no work from my end - no even reconfiguring my router.

 

 

Depends what RSP you are changing from / to - each have different authentication methods, and different settings regarding VLAN tagging

 

For example

 

Bigpipe, NOWNZ, Skinny use PPPoE without VLAN10 with no unique username and password - So you could Churn between these with no router Change

 

Vodafone, Trustpower, Orcon, Slingshot used DHCP with VLAN10 Tagging on - So you could Churn between these with no router Change

 

Spark, 2Degrees used PPPoE with VLAN 10 -  Tagging on (however 2degrees is a unique username and password) - so you could Churn from 2degrees to Spark without a router change, however if your churned from Spark to 2degrees you would need to update your router with  your unique username and password)

 

if you switch from a RSP that uses a different authentication method from your current RSP your router will require a change/reprogram

I switch every year now. There is no loyalty - if they're giving new customers a better deal than existing customers then there is no point.

 

Last time I asked the losing provider for a similar deal as their 'new customer deal' and they refused, I went to the retention team the business just stopped replying to my request. Waste of time.

 

I usually bounce between 1 of my 3 'favorite' companies.

I have managed to get 3 months free the last few years by switching providers (or threatening to).
Brings the average price back down to $75 (and no need for a 2degrees mobile plan).

I'd say keep switching until they offer their existing customers the same deals as new ones

I don't change very often.  This is because every-single-time I have changed ISP, it's been a stuff up ad I've had to spend hours calling helplines to sort it out.  It's just not worth the hassle.

Was waiting for that ;-) but I've had no problems with them and every time I look around they were the best pricing (not counting the special discounts but no point getting 6 months half price if it's going to cost me $15 more a month for the other 6 months).

 

I've had one issue and that was when a rodent chewed through the fiber cable in my ceiling and needed to be replaced. To be sure, it was UFF that fixed it but if they billed MR I wouldn't know as it didn't cost me anything (I was bracing myself for a big bill)

I will play the game with power companies because there is a decent saving to be had there, but with internet its all much of a muchness unless its a deal where its bundled with something else that I dont want or with other products they sell that I may not want to move around.

 

Times not worth it and the uncertainty about internet breaking to play games to only save $20 a month on a time limited deal for another term commitment.

Yeah. Ultimately these bonuses are not free, everyone does them, they (the cost) is built into the price. Imagine if bonuses stop, prices go down, compete on service and reliability

Been with MyRepublic for over five years. On unlimited gig plan with landline for $99/month. No problems with internet or phone, so can't see any reason to change.

 

Power from Genesis for over seven years.

 

Looks like we don't move around much.

I've always played the jumping ship game, or at minimum threatening too. I'm on stuff at the moment as I got 4 months free which was a sizeable saving. I know there is differences but for your average Joe consumer that doesn't work in IT and need static whitelisted IP addresses or particular peering most providers will be fine. What's crazy is when my stuff contract runs out I'll likely jump to orcon, so I'll move from vocus to vocus and pay less for doing it. The only difference I really noticed was the router stuff gave me is far better than what I used to have on orcon (they've changed their routers now), but that was a selling point on top of the free period to not have to deal with working out router compatibility but getting a decent one included.

I have never set up a MR connection before but according to their website here
