Brand is Intel and I have tried all the drivers I can get my hands on but I've only used automatic .exe methods I'll try extracting a driver file tonight for a manual method.

And as someone who works for DSE we dont sell pc parts any more. Any left lying around in store are on clearance and the only thing that we sell that I can use is the usb to Ethernet adaptor we sell for the MacBook air. But I would rather not.

Seeming the thing doesn't fault once I've disabled and then re-enabled it I would rather try my method of making a script that disables and re-enables the driver on start up. Does any one know if this is possible? Would it be as simple as a .bat file?

Cheers guys for all your help

If you want to go batch, you'll need to use devcon (devcon disable [hardware ID]) or WMIC, or you could get one of the various powershell CMDlets and use that ;)

Is there any way to delay the loading of the driver, would that do it? Have it loaded last maybe? Or not load it in the first place and then load it? Would seem cleaner to me than loading then reloading, especially if it means not using a batch file.

How would you delay the driver loading? Only thing I can think of is to mess with the bios

freitasm: Get an ethernet adapter from Dick Smith plug it in and disable the old one...

+1 for this

Some motherboards are notorious for onboard components playing up.
I had a PC that had occasional problems with the onboard ethernet port once it got a bit more than 12 months old.
It was always bad if you went away and shut it down for a few days (or a week or so). Used to pretend to not exist.

I would buy an ethernet card.
Disable the onboard networking, install the new card - install the driver (if you have to) and I think your problem will be fixed.

Not sure if Dick Smith sell things like this anymore - but something like this would probably be ok

Fixed that for you ;)

Does the issue still occur if there is no cable connected to the NIC during startup?

You didnt have the ethernet cable pushed into a USB port on the back did you?

I once reached over the back of a server and pushed a USB cable into an RJ45 socket - very hard to get around the back of a server when pushed against a wall!.
Took a while to realise that our backups werent working :-(

It will still see the NIC, it will just have no connectivity. It will rule out whether media detection is causing the issue.

Just put in a new $20 network card. Then disable the old one.
Save yourself time & frustration

or
spend lots of time with
-bios updates (be carefull)
-new cables
-bios updates on the router
-driver updates for both the motherboard chipset & the ethernet driver
-changing power save on the NIC driver (turn off the network ports power save)
