Seeming the thing doesn't fault once I've disabled and then re-enabled it I would rather try my method of making a script that disables and re-enables the driver on start up. Does any one know if this is possible? Would it be as simple as a .bat file?
Cheers guys for all your help

+1 for this
Some motherboards are notorious for onboard components playing up.
I had a PC that had occasional problems with the onboard ethernet port once it got a bit more than 12 months old.
It was always bad if you went away and shut it down for a few days (or a week or so). Used to pretend to not exist.
I would buy an ethernet card.
Disable the onboard networking, install the new card - install the driver (if you have to) and I think your problem will be fixed.
Not sure if Dick Smith sell things like this anymore - but something like this would probably be ok

robjg63: You didnt have the ethernet cable pushed into a USB port on the back did you?
I once reached over the back of a server and pushed a USB cable into an RJ45 socket - very hard to get around the back of a server when pushed against a wall!.
Took a while to realise that our backups werent working :-(
theUpload: Um if their is no cable into the NIC then my computer wont se the Ethernet hardware will it?

It will still see the NIC, it will just have no connectivity. It will rule out whether media detection is causing the issue.
