No system is going to be perfect. My objection to the phone is just based on my lack of familiarity with it and the potential that raises for unexpected problems after I am in Thailand. I prefer something I understand better.

 

Regarding the Kiwibank phone service, I do use that from time to time and I don't have to pay a fee because I am a pensioner. But I'm not sure how that would work from Thailand. I also don't know what security questions they are going to ask and I may not have the information at hand (like my IRD number). I need to be confident that whatever I use will work when I need it.

 

At the moment I am just collecting information. I will also be ringing Kiwibank about this but I wanted to first see what the very knowledgeable people here have to say.

I've had Kiwibank block credit card payments when I've been offshore so definitely talk to Kiwibank before you leave about the best options and take their advice on best way to pay.

A completely different approach to this (given that it (hopefully!) sounds like a one off requirement). 

 

Have you considered:

 

1. Confirming the recipient account details in advance (even if the final costs may change while there); and 

 

2. Have a trusted contact (family member or friend) here in NZ appointed as your power of attorney to complete the transactions for you by visiting a Kiwibank branch in NZ?

 

That way you could just instruct your trusted contact here the amount to be sent by phone and the bank will provide confirmation which could also be emailed.

Someone who really wanted your money would get your phone and they will get all the codes to get in if they knew a couple more information about your account.

 

 

It depends what "phone" is in this context. A voice call? Yes, not secure - know a few things about you and a person with social engineering skills could drain someone's account. An app? More secure than phone calls. Phones can be locked out, require fingerprint for transactions/login, require a second authentication factor for transactions, etc.

 

 

I think I am misunderstanding the issues

 

The title of the thread is multifactor authentication - in my opinion the phone receiving as SMS to let the user reset a password is not completely failsafe as someone can just steal the phone and they wil get SMS codes to reset password, depending on what else they know about you.

 

But reading more into it, it seems OP is looking for a way to transfer money while in Thailand. In that case yes the APP will be the easiest and as secure as loging into web browser's internet banking. But if OP has internet banking anyway, then the APP will not offer much extra other than not needing a second authentification factor.

 

But if you want to do international money transfers from Thailand then I'm not the best person to ask.
