I'm not sure if this is possible...



When my IPAQ 3970 is connected via ActiveSync (USB) to my desktop PC running Win XP, is there any way that I can communicate from desktop to PPC via TCP/IP? Eg ping?



I can surf the Net from PPC.



The free PocketPC app, vxUtil, tells me the IP address, etc, on the PPC.


If it is not possible, due to limitations of the serial connection, what alternatives do I have to make it work? eg Ethernet cradle, GPRS, WiFi...?

Using VxUtil you can find your Pocket PC's IP address, and yes, it'll respond to a PING, and if you have a server on your Pocket PC you should be able to access it too. There's the PicoWebServer for example, a freeware web server for Pocket PC, which works quite well.

My issue is more with the desktop to PPC communications. Will ActiveSync (via a USB connection) allow the PPC to behave as a separate identifiable IP address from the desktop PC to which it is connected? I'm struggling to see how this can work.

Yes, your Pocket PC will have an IP address of its own, and your computer will see it as a separate entity on the network.
