My IT guru has lent me a jasjar to play with for a week. Its very nice. Its very expensive. Did I mention its very nice?

Im trying to hook up sync with our Small Business Server 2003. With my old SP2, I had to disable certificate checking in order for it to work. Does anyone know if you have to do this on the jasjar, and if so, where the appropriate program is located.

Thanks......Its very nice.......

You can't - at least for now. The old CERTCHK tool does not work on Windows Mobile 5.0 (or at least when I tested it). Not sure when Microsoft will release a new version.

You can ask your IT folks if they can create a certificate? I run my own Exchange Server 2003 on a Windows 2003 Server machine and I have my own certificates.

I havent got too far with it. I only got it dropped off at 10pm last night. The wife instantly grabbed it and started playing solitaire!!

Once I get the wi-fi and server sync via 3g or wi-fi going, Ill be able to play with it and see what I like.

Initial comments: If you like Windows Mobile 2002, 2003, You will love 2005. Im not a hard core technical guy, Im just an end user who knows enough to get in trouble so I'll try to limit comments to end user experience

Setup is painless - the CD steps you through things. Activesync seems to be essentially unchanged in how it looks and works.

the screen is beautiful. very clear and much larger than my SP2 (go figure)

The OS seems to be very intuitive. I havent opened the manual yet and have managed to get most things going.

I wouldnt want to twist your arm to get one at this early stage, especially with the RRP as it is. If you can get a hold of one to try, give it a go.

Cheers

You will like it when you have Exchange ActiveSync over the air...

It actually changed a lot. There are two different UI: one for Windows Mobile 2003 and before, and one for Windows Mobile 5 and after.

You now have more control of each synchronisation, better view of what's being synchronised, more options.

That's true. And very visible outdoors. On a (unusual) sunny day here in Wellington I had the Universal and the Apache side by side and the Universal is much clearer and easier to read.

If you know someone who can get you one wholesale you can chop around $500 or more of RRP.

Must admit, so far seems a pretty nice unit but does seem a little sluggish when compared with my old PDA2K

I have pretty much decided to go the hog and buy the Jasjar. As an end user in a management role, the features and ease of use have sold it to me. Plus, my guru advises that there are deals to be made on RRP.

I have had no experience with other PDA's so the speed is quick enough for me, I have had no crazy errors or issues, I have managed to get over the air sync going, Wi-fi works, camera is good enough for what I want to do with it, the keyboard is surprisingly useable - even with my fat fingers and most of all.....I just like it ;-)

Now, to address the memory issues, Im going to buy a 1GB SD card. I can get a 16x or a 60x. Any comments on which way to go?. Im interesed in valid reasons other than "bigger, better, faster, more"

Im thinking that inbox etc will be on the card, additional programs will go there and of course mp3s will be there. What speed is best (adeqaute?)

Thank

Good that you managed to get OTA ActiveSync working.

As for the SD card, the fastest the better - it's a slow medium, remember that. I bought a couple of Pretec 133x 1GB SD cards while in the US (Oct 2005) and they are fast! I have one in my digital SLR and the second one in one of my Pocket PC - what a difference!

Inbox is not stored on external memory - only attachements are. As a rule I install ALL programs on an external SD to leave as much memory available as possible.

This does not make much sense on a Windows Mobile 5 device now, since the flash memory is used to store programs and separated from the memory using for execution. So in this case you should leave enough space for your PIM (email can use a lot), and fill the storage then the SD card.

If you really have to go Vodafone then the Jasjar is the fastest data around (3G), but if not a requirement, then the Apache on Telecom New Zealand will beat it easily and the keyboard is more practical too (the screen on the Jasjar is much better though). The Apache is known in the US a PPC-6700.

Ok. i went to Vodafone shop today and asked for a play on JasJar. it feels solid and good. Not too big, it is similar size to my ipaq h3850 and i'm quite comfortable using it.

Pairing it with jabra for bluetooth voice calling and it will be fine.

The speed/response is a bit slow, however the screen is very very nice. the buttons are that easy to mis-press compare to what many people cited.

The thumbboard is nice and tactile, i like it, however, the symbols and some characters are not in their usual 104-sibling's location, which may take a while to learn and find.

I spoke to the salesperson, you can get this on plan/contract with subsidy, subsidy from $100 onward and can only be connected on Mobilise plan, (I did asked about whether You Choose plan is entitled or not, and she said it'll be $100)

Anyhow. It is a good device, I'd get it if i can afford. :-) I probably will put it on You Choose voice plan + Data plan. And continue using my current number for voice calls, which then i could choose either Nokia N80 or Imate SP5 or HTC Breeze when it comes out.

Hi All,

My Jamjar is going spastic. It froze on me last night twice whilst plugged in to USB sync/charging cable and I had to push the wee reset button in each time.

Today I am trying to get it to even work. The imate reset screen shows up then splits into misaligned segments then the windows mobile 2005 logo is replicated all over the screen and the whole lot scroll up flat out. This has happened a few times this morning and now it is just blank. As tho there is no power.

How do I do a complete reset? (not a soft one)

Any other ideas other than returning to supplier?

Cheers

Wigs
