Sorry y'all but the online gaming world is completely foreign to me.

12 year old son has been into Minecraft for a while and announced he wants to by something called "Garrys Mod".  Looking on Steam it appears he needs to have other games installed before this one will work.

Can anyone tell me if the game is harmless enough for a 12 year old to install and run?

He only has a pretty basic laptop with an Intel R HD400 video card, Win 8 64MB, i3 3110 2.4 Ghz processor and 4Gb ram.  Says video is Direct X11.

Should it run ok?
Any recommendations as to what else he may need?
Should I agree for him to install it?

Thanks

Garrys mod is basically a huge sandbox. The game can use other game assets from valve games such as portal or half life. These aren't need though but add to the amount of things you can build.

Depending on what sort of stuff you build the physics engine can use a fair bit of cpu but should run fine on that computer.

It isn't a shooting game but you can run around with guns if you wanted to, very mild violence but worth pointing out. Their is a popular youtube series by the yogscast were they build some really amazing things, they are a good place to have a look and you will soon get a feel for the game.

Garry's Mod is a mod for Half Life but isn't about that game at all.

It's on a similar vein as Minecraft in that it's about building environments but is much more advanced than Minecraft. You don't win or lose, you just build.

Incidentally, a friend of mine used Garry's Mod for his Masters Thesis in Architecture. It had to do with how people perceive architecture and their ability to use components from famous buildings and recreate their own in an online collaborative environment.
