i'm so conflicted about picking one up. In one way it is the device that I have always wanted a iPad with attached physical controls.

On the other hand though from all reports it's under powered(one of my biggest problems with the 3DS which I brought day 1) Frame rate drops and zelda cannot even output in 1080p.

Then you come to the fact that game saves are locked to the console and there is no way to transfer saves to another console and no online game backups incase your save corrupts your console gets nicked or just breaks. And the whole online suff so far looks to be more of same and not something actually useful.

Nintendo are certainly known for compromised first releases(game boy advanced front light) that they then make good but the 3DS suffered throughout it's life even after a processor bump in latter models by games that where limited by the hardware(Pokemon and 3d and the amount of games that actually made use of the nub) Is the switch going to be like this? It's hard to say but after being burnt by day one 3DS day one switch is not something I really want to do.

Will I pick one up. Most likely I have always had a love of nintendo content but if its another case of the games being let down by the hardware the it gets harder to justify particularly when its in the same price range as a PS4.

I wouldn't be surprised if they offer transfering saves / cloud saves once the online store officially opens / in the future patch.

Most console launches have pretty basic features initially, then the other features are drip fed in.

Re: Underpowered - I guess it depends what you're comparing it to. Compared to a ps4 / ps4 pro then yeh sure it is underpowered. But I guess the real question is - are the graphics / gameplay affected? BOTW looks pretty incredible on my TV/portable mode, so personally I don't think it is underpowered. I don't care if it can't run AAA games at the full quality like a pc/ps4, but im sure it will provide more than adequate graphics - at the end of the day I care more about gameplay (with half decent graphcis) than amazing graphics (with poor gameplay).

When you consider the fact that I can still get brand new titles for our old PS3, which about 10 years old, it makes the Nintendo consoles seem quite short-lived by comparison.

the ps3/xbox 360 generation was a bit of a weird one since it lasted so long, most console generations have been much shorter than the one before current.

Kinda shows that you can make a good looking fun game on pretty minimal hardware once you are free of the SD interlaced crap of the ones before that. Forza horizon on the 360 still looks good imo.

My problem is not so much how it compares to a ps4 but when you look at other ARM based tablets that can output much higher resolutions like 1440P and in most cases you can get 1080p 7" screens and games can still look great but zelda suffers at 900P in docked mode.

To me either Nintendo is doing way to much with zelda drawing to much on screen or another way to look at it is the system is not up to what nintendo software and to me i want what the software division want power wise.

Quite frankly if they did decide to stop making platform exclusives and make their games on other systems Zelda on a Nvidia 1070 or 1060 would quite frankly be amazing.

I should add i'm frame rate snob i'm not some 60FPS + person but from what i have seen it dipps well below 30FPS at times to me takes you out of the experience and i would not mind paying a bit more for nintendo to put some more power into the dock to boost performance even if they had to make it an optional extra rather than just including a HDMI converter dock in the box like they did.

I'm not addicted to graphics, so the console not running at 1080P doesn't bother me at all. The only reason running through the Xbox annoys me is I have a graphic drop that I don't have to have. It will be interesting to see how well Skyrim runs on the console in both docked and handheld mode, I would imagine it will kill the battery life quite noticably. I guess that is my biggest peeve about the console, that the battery life blows on the better titles. Still love it, but it has definitely got some negatives.

I thought running thru the xbox added latency?

In anycase, if the output is HDCP protected then a cheap HDMI splitter should solve that for you, no point degrading it even furthur than is needed.

I do not notice any latency in the game, nor did I notice any when playing FFX HD on my Playstation TV. If there is some then guess I am lucky it's not terrible enough for me to notice :D

I have an HDMI audio splitter bought three years from Jaycar and it cannot split the audio and video from this device or the Playstation TV - as would be expected video works but not audio. Cost me $200 or so when I got it, but still looks cheap to me. Always intended to replace it, just not found a viable alternative yet (but in my defence because it worked for three years I haven't been looking).

I have one of the generic looking white square $10 aliexpress audio extractors around somewhere. It wasnt any use for me because it messed up detection of the TV and made everything to into the wrong colourspace - I can give it a try on my playstation tv later if I can find it and let you know if it makes audio happen.

It did on a chromecast which I think forces HDCP on its output, but I stopped using it when audio chromecasts became available and put it away "somewhere safe"

A few days in now and really enjoying being able to move about the house and play; using the big screen when no-one else is and carrying the switch around otherwise.

Really wishing I didn't have a driving commute for now

What's everyone doing for cases/screen protectors?

I thought I'd go naked around the house the first few days and so has the switch, but now I'm ready to venture further afield I picked up a an official case and screen protector from JB hi-fi.

My partner purchased one and Shes loving it....Anyone having Wifi issues with it? Wifi as in unable to see my own..or any local router..Nothing..Nada? I have even put the Switch right next to mine, still nothing?. I have ignored it for the moment and she has started playing Zelda(which is great by the way)but im thinking of all the "updates" she will be missing out on...unless i go the LAN Adaptor approach which shouldnt be necessary. I see online that theres a recovery mode you can go to that resets the Switch without deleting saved data(dont want to lose those Zelda saves). Ill give that a go and see what happens. If that doesnt do anything hopefully its not a Wifi Hardware related issue? See how i go.

I would say take it back and get a replacement if your not getting any signal it is likely a faulty unit. There is no way to transfer saves so if you wait longer you will just be losing more progress.

Thanks for the replies...ill try that reset and see how that goes. If not then ill see if i can get it replaced...one little issue there. It was purchased from JB Hifi in Aus as we were there the previous weekend. Im hoping as Nintendo AUS/NZ is under the same umbrella the warranty applies here. Ill give them a yell. Cheers.
