I just noticed that there is now a Playstation Store icon in the video menu of the PS3 XMB, but when you select it it says that the content is not available in your country / region. Could it be that we're about to get movie rentals?

Could be the 3.40 Update coming out in 9 days, with Playstation Plus = try games for 1 hour before you buy :) and possibly Movie rentals, only problem is our limited caps

I've been waiting for the movie rentals to come out on PS3 for so long, strange how Australia got it but we haven't yet.

I wouldn't get your hopes up for the video store too soon, despite Sony saying it would be by the end of this year (can't find source for that claim). See the comment in the comments section here from an official Playstation source: http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2010/05/21/au-video-store-arrives-celebrated-by-exclusive-oz-community-event/

The language is not very encouraging: "I hear you. We totally want to get the Video Store to NZ. It’s a massive undertaking from a technical / infrastructure perspective, (not to mention licensing arrangements etc). It’s just huge – but rest assured, as soon as it’s possible…"

...Would think that licencing would be the main issue

Yeah apparently New Zealand's film licensing is pretty expensive so most international film developers don't bother. There was recently a petition at Alice in Videoland (DVD hire place) that had info about how expensive it was for foreign movie makers to get a license to show their films in New Zealand so many don't.

I wonder if this would apply for PS3 movie rentals as well? Would film companies have to pay extra again to get films to NZ though the PS3?

Hopefully this isn't the case. I'm sure it'll be sweet for the big movies at least.
