They ran out of keys. You'll get one as soon as they become available - apparently later this week "as soon as possible".

AGE OF EMPIRES SALES INFORMATION: Due to the overwhelming success of the Age of Empires III sale, we temporarily ran out of keys to unlock the game during the sale. If you purchased the game during the sales period, you will get a key in the next week. When new keys are added to the system you will be auto-assigned a key. There is no need to call support or take any other action from your end. We will post information on the forums and on the website when the keys are available and the next time you click 'View Game Keys' for the game you should be assigned one.

You will need to have the Games for Windows Marketplace client installed.

Funny now the status is "Downloaded 478.88MB of 2.75GB - 17%" despite it has finished downloading, and attempted installation twice and got to the point where I was asked for CD key, and that's when the snitch hit.

Haha, how often does this happen?

Happens quite often during Steam's big sales - although rather than continuing to offer the product, they stop selling once the keys are exhausted and only activate the item again when keys are available.

So creating a new key isn't a instant process for the seller as they wouldn't have the generator, they would have to contact the producer right?

Something like that. GFWL and Steam are just content distribution systems - they are allocated a certain number of licenses and when they run out they need to be replenished by the publisher.

update - the keys have been released. if you login into the windows marketplace client now, you should be able to see your key now for AOE-III

Just wondering how exactly did you come across this was it sent out to you via a email as you already had GFWL installed or read it somewhere else???

I had the pleasure of missing out as I (at the time) could not find the use MS Points link and was only able to go for credit card option but as the cash i had put on it did not show up due to being so late at night I missed out.

Soo if they send these specials out to the people who have GFWL installed that would be great as although i have played through AOE3 and the War Chiefs it would still have been nice enough to spash out 10 MS points for hehe.

I had Age of Empires, Age of Empires II and Age of Empires III (from this series all three games on DVD, but never installed). With the download I actually installed it and played the single player campaign the last two nights. Quite good to get some "on the job training".

I also have had pretty much all the AoE games bar the first one. Loved them all I missed the cheap download though. Also really enjoyed the Settlers gamies too played the first 4 of those.
