As you mentioned, just untick all of the protocols except for g.dmt.

It forces the modem to connect at adsl1 speeds.

OP here with an update.

Over the weekend I had to move some furniture in the spare room / office. When I did I discovered two telecom jackpoints. I plugged the TP-Link modem into one and nothing happened, into the second and voila, immediately, all systems go.

So, to recap, the TP-Link won't go in the kitchen or bedroom (Thompson and Cisco/Linksys do) but will work in the office. Is there something wierd going on with the wiring in this house? I was going to ping coffeebaron about a master filter - have we already got one? If so how do I tell?
