Hi all

Need some remote diagnosis from all you clever people!

Went to friends house today - she says her wireless has been abominably slow for the last week

She has a Linksys WAG200G wireless router.

On the router the following lights are lit:

Power / DSL / Internet

but the Internet 1 2 3 4 lights are not

Downloaded Speedtest app and tested wireless upload/download via iphone 4s n got:

download 0.06 upload 0.04 ping 81

going thru phone's 3G got:

download 2.96 upload 1.35 ping80

is the diagnosis that the router's had it??

LAN lights won't be on if nothing is plugged in.

You need to perform the basic fault checking process

- plug in a cabled connection to establish if that works
- change wireless channels and use something like inSSIDer to select the best channel

In an urban environment 2.4Ghz can be pretty useless these days due to congestion. You need to ensure you're using the best channel for the environment you're in.

Hi, firstly what do you get if you have a wired ethernet connection to the modem from a PC. What are the modem DSL connection stats from the router.

What are the actual stats from the router for the internet connection?

It could be that they've been slowed down to dial-up speed for going over their monthly data cap.

A few notes (some covered already):
  • Disregard any wireless speed test for now
  • Restart the modem
  • Post the modem DSL stats
People will tell you about the modem stats. If they're bad then it could be the house wiring or the wrong type of connection to the ISP.

If there's nothing wrong with the DSL stats then plug an ethernet cable and run speedtest to the same server as before. If the speeds improve then most likely there's some wireless interference. Changing channels is a good start.

So get her to check her usage with the ISP.
Is her wifi secure?

might also pay to check if she has a wifi friendly cordless phone i.e. something thats not 2.4Ghz
