Hey all

Got a nagging suspicion that my ADSL Modem is starting to fail due to:

* For the past 2 days, around 5:00pm to 6:00pm our internet speed has dropped from an effective 10 Mbps to around 1 or less
* SNAP did some tests and found the latency appeared to be all at the modem, so suggested swapping the modem out.

At the moment Ive got a WRT54GL running Tomato in Half Bridge to a TP Link 8840.  The latter is a good number of years old and has performed flawlessly.

What would people suggest as a replacement for the TP Link ... is the Draytek Vigor 120 still a good solid unit?  We are a prob 2k approx to the ADSL box so need something which holds a good connection.

Cheers

Craig

latency jumps at that exact time? is it possible a cloud sync is set to happen at 5pm?

since you have tomato, have you checked traffic graphs to insure your upload isnt saturating?

Yea ... been watching the graphs and there is literally nothing happening on the line at all during the periods causing grief.

Its only been since Wed ... so it might just be coincidence in regard to the timing.

Case in hand ... for the past hour or so, VOIP was unuseable and speed was shocking ... but 5 mins ago ... we were back up to 10Mbps again (and back to 6 now :) ) ... all of which are a massive improvement form .6.

sounds like you have a very odd case on your hands...

a modem doesnt normally die, only at 5pm till 6.. seems odd which is why i suspect saturation.

if not the case though, replacing it is a sure way to test - adsl modems are pretty cheap anyway.

Yea agree, however the "5:00pm thing" might just be when Ive noticed it ... however working online and from home all day Id think Id notice :)

Downloading Torrents at 5:30 in the morning (Tour de France time! :) ) seems to be OK ... but as you say, modems are cheap.
