so once again the issue was with the customers devices/setup

Well more that Spark sent me a B618 to use for by gigabit fibre connection which I've since found out was the bottleneck. They gave us wireless while our fibre was being installed which is why they sent the B618 out to us but also said that once the fibre is installed to use the same modem. Not ideal at all. I had a couple HG659s lying around luckily

Went back to basics, just running an HG659 as router/modem connected directly to ONT. Have PC connected with ethernet and speedtest 337down / 531up. It bursts up to 900+ down in the first couple seconds of the speed test then rapidly declines to between 200-300. I'm in Christchurch and this is to Spark NZ Christchurch server. Is it just being limited due to the lockdown etc?

No, there is absolutely no fibre shaping going on by Spark due to the lockdown. Nor should there be any issues with the Enable network in Chch. I just tried both Spark CH speedtest servers (Yes there are two temporarily for odd reasons) and got 940/492 and 941/492.

I also know I can get that speed 24x7 to them.

I would suggest something about your PC/SW setup/browser etc is the issue.

Cheers - N

The agent should have shipped the modem as part of this. they may have assumed the system would have handled this.

Yep I got it sorted. Was using a Huawei B618 modem/router which was the bottleneck. Swapped it out for an HG659 and getting 900/500 over ethernet and 300/300 over wifi.

Your welcome :) it's truly a brilliant modem. I peak at 700mbit on WiFi on my phone (mate 20 pro - 4x4 ac wifi which is rare for a phone)

The mesh units pair really well with it too. I've got one sitting in my study (basement style so bad for penetration) they get near identical speeds.

I don't like to hero it as you should get that speed. But given the right setup and envorment they wipe the floor with many alternatives out there...

Does anyone know why I can't cast to my Nvidia Shield when its connected via ethernet? I had this problem when I was using an HG659 and thought it was the modem but since swapping it out for the Spark Smart Modem it's still not working. I can cast fine if the Shield is connected to Wifi but not ethernet. To clarify when connected via ethernet my Wifi devices can see the Shield, and I can use apps on my iPhone to control the Shield. If I try cast it comes up on the TV but then just shows a loading spinner.

Update: Updated the Shield and restarted it and seems to be working now (most of the time). It's still a bit flakey and can get stuck on the loading spinner when trying to Cast. Not sure why its less reliable over ethernet though which is strange.
