Been able to make any progress on this?
Know if you can buy another HDD and work on that and then swap them out?

I haven't made any progress as yet. After seeing some images of the cable, I think I have an old cable somewhere in storage, got to find it or get another.

I have read on other forums that the HDD is pretty standard – others have added larger capacity drives with the intention of storing their CD collections. However, you do need to start with the HDD that is in the car. This process only replaces the Japanese language file with the English one. I think all other files, boot instructions, etc. remain unchanged. Maybe you could use a clone image from another source.

After a long drive in the car this weekend, I am determined to sort this out. The Japanese navigation needs some urgent attention. I need to figure out how to turn off navigation or lower the volume of the voice directions - it seems that every time the vehicle is detected as entering a new prefecture / province, a loud welcome / announcement is played through the driver’s side speaker. This becomes annoying after a few repetitions.

I hope to make some progress this weekend.

edit: insert paragraphs.

Thanks
Got any pics of the HDD and cables?
We get the vehicle sometime this week so keen to get straight into updating the HDD for Englihs.

The cable I need is one to attach a 2.5" hdd (typically your laptop HDD) to a 3.5" slot on my desktop pc.

Here is a page which has pics of the initial stages of this conversion - it goes as far as showing the hard drive after removal from the vehicle. Unfortunately, this process is not illustrated further at this page. http://loapsh.wordpress.com/2008/11/05/and-i-hack-it-mitsubishi-mmcs-hdd-removal-guide/

Another change I need to make to the system is to install a radio FM expander (or something similar) since the unit only goes up to 90 (Mhz?). I'm led to believe that this is a simple process once you know where to find the cable joint in the external antenna. These things are available Super Cheap Auto and similar stores for less than $20 and are installed "in line" at the cable joint.

Anyone done this on the Outlander and have any useful tips to share?

We were lucky and a band expander is already in the vehicle.

Where did you get the HDD cable from?

Turns out that the device/cable I thought I had was a SATA to IDE adapter for 3.5" HDD's.

However, just popped round to the local computer store and managed to get the exact thing needed - an "Anyware" branded IDE 2.5" to 3.5" converter without metal frame - for $15.

There are a few listings of similar items on Trade-me and these go for $3.5 to $6 plus about $5 shipping (no pickup). Here is one example http://www57.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=783609921
