I'm really wanting to move all my passwords to a dedicated password manager lately, unsure why but it can't be a bad idea.

I've done a bit of a look around on Geekzone and can find a few similar threads from the past, the last one was in 2013 though from what I could see.

Since then, has a lot changed? I'm considering going for 1password because:

  • Familiarity - We use it at work
  • Usability - I use the Mac app constantly at the office, and the iOS app seems pretty cool on the iPhone (gave it a quick test with a free account)
  • It seems to have been around since forever and looks to have a good rep.

Are there any other major contenders? LastPass looks good but I saw some reviews that mentioned LogMeIn owns it now, and I'm not about that at all from past experience.

Is the cloud based option with 1password worth worrying about? Its probably stored safer than I could ever store the vault though.

Any feedback very much appreciated! :-) Paid/free options.

One other thing I forgot to mention, has anyone had any trouble accessing passwords stored on a cloud password manager? Not just on 1password but on any others I mean.

Using 1Password for most of my devices. I havent tried others so cant really comment (except Keepass - but that doesnt really work on mobile devices i believe).

1Password works pretty well for what i need it for.

That's what I'm using currently but it's really hit and miss on what it'll auto fill passwords for. For instance the iCloud Keychain won't auto-fill the login details on an in-house app for work, where as 1password and LastPass do it super easily.

Yes it can be hit and miss. Developers can update their third party apps to work with iCloud Keychain. Does this mean your in house app has been developed to allow 1Pass to use it or do they work a different way to keychain?

That only works if you are using Safari. Other browsers (FireFox etc) are not linked into Keychain.

iCloud keychain is good - but then you will be tied down to the Apple ecosystem and it would become a barrier to move. At least with a 3rd party option, its not necessarily a barrier. Maybe the OP is with Apple at the moment, but 2-3 years down the line, the OP may want to explore other options.

Having said that, I do use iCloud as well as 1Password on my Mac and iPad. But most of my passwords are stored on 1Password with a select few on iCloud (non exclusively though)

Been using 1Password on Mac and iOS for years.  It has tight iOS integration now (since extensions were enabled in the OS) and the keyboard shortcuts in Mac browsers are a huge time saver.

Yeah, I'm using LastPass. It has a browser extension for all the browsers I have on my Mac (Chrome, Safari and Firefox) and an app on my iOS devices. If I need to recall a password for any of my apps I can open LastPass with TouchID and then just tap on the "copy password" option so I can paste it into the app. LastPass has also recently added an Emergency Access feature where you can designate a family member or significant other to have access to your passwords if necessary. I'm pretty happy with it overall. My memory is shocking and because I tend to flit from one browser to another, the built-in password memories for each aren't a complete solution.
