Will I be able to cast music from third party apps (such as Foobar2000) to a Chromecast from my iOS devices? ie. will the Chromecast show up as a target in this iOS playback list?

The app needs Chromecast support. Spotify for example can cast to the Chromecast but iOS (in general) can't.

For IOS, chrome cast is a mixed bag of ‘works perfectly’ to ‘flaky’ or just ‘not possible’, and entirely depends on the app being used. Spotify and NetFlix work perfectly, VLCStreamer player was ‘spotty’ and most others are just ‘not available’ in my own experience...

If you’re only in the Apple world, even an old ATV2 or 3 work perfectly all the time, for roughly the same money?

ATV2 is 720p ATV3 is 1080 and you need the premium ATV4 only if you want 4K...
