No idea why people keep comparing phones to laptops - phones are way more valuable to nearly everyone than a laptop is. And besides, laptops range in prices similar to what phones do - those that want the best happily pay thousands for it, those that are happy with an entry level device are happy they can get one for a few hundred or less. This applies to basically all consumer electronics devices: PCs, Tablets, SmartWatches, TVs, Cameras, Drones, 3D printers, home theatre, E-Bikes, the list is endless.

Same applies to many other consumer goods catergories:

“For the price of this $50,000 car I could buy three of these $17,000 cars over here!”

“For the price of this $1 million house I could buy 3 of these $333k houses!”

“For the price of these $200 shoes I could buy 3 of these $66 shoes”

wrong comparison!

"for the price of this car I can buy a house."

whether a phone or a laptop is more valuable to you is up to you. for me my phone can be used for 1% of the things I want to do, whereas a laptop, about 95%, desktop, 99%.

I have traditionally tended to spend about $1500 on a phone and $3000 on a laptop but I use my phone at least as much as my laptop. So, at least from a utilisation point of view, I am willing to consider rebalancing that spend.

Having said that the cheapest laptop I can find that I would be comfortable buying is the entry 256Gb 13" Macbook Pro which is $2550, so not much cheaper than $3000. Also, I replace my phone more frequently than my laptop so shifting a dollar from one to the other is not depreciation neutral.

I don't intend to replace my phone this year but I want to replace my laptop in the next couple of months, so I will be interested to see whether Apple have any imminent Mac updates.

I'm quite surprised by how much is still in stock. I remember preordering the iPhone 6 and there were 4-6 week shipping estimates on some models. This year, it's only pushed back by a few days to two weeks - and that is for the Max models. The regular Xs are all still shipping on 21st.

my order is 4-8 weeks was ordered within 2mins Max 512GB

The thing is, in the example above, the $50,000 car comes with a heap of safety and luxury features that the $17,000 car lacks.

However, in the case of the iPhone, it's the reverse! There are cheaper phones that are much higher spec'ed.

Just see my Huawei P20 Pro comparison in an earlier post. It's $400 cheaper than an iPhone XR, but comes with highly rated triple rear cameras and a much higher definition OLED display.

So having once been an absolute Android fanboy and an Apple basher I have come to respect Apple for the following reasons (and no, you can't deny the facts here):

1) Software updates are quick to Apple products. For example, the Bluetooth vulnerability last year and KRACK were patched within days of the exploits being announced with reassurance from Apple the problem was fixed. I still have quite a few Android phones (including my secondary phone - a Vodafone N8 from memory) which is sitting on security patches way in the past.

2) Phone quality - there is no doubt some of the phones on the Android side are really nice but you have to admit many of the Android phones have design queues from the iPhone X this time around. Yes, quality is comparable but Apple have really put a tonne of work into both the quality control and software of their products which sees them lasting quite a lot longer than the Android counterparts.

3) Phone security - the fact Apple take pride in the security of their products is quite a big bonus for me.

4) Software. Huawei's software is TERRIBLE! Their bluetooth stack is largely broken (it took them a year to release a software update to fix an issue with BLE devices for my mothers Huawei P10 Lite so she can sync her Fitbit) and on top of this the battery management is far too aggressive often killing apps with little warning.

This is what you're getting for the price - you're getting a quality product with mostly stable software and an ecosystem that "just works". I just have an iPhone and an Apple Watch but like how I don't have any issues, get timely software updates and furthermore don't have to root my phone to install an ad blocker in the default browser. iMessage is also very good as well as the fact my phone is a brick to anyone but myself due to iCloud. There are many things Apple does well, but you need to buy into it. They're 2 products and both have their perks but in general I like the fact that if I want to keep my phone for 5 years I know for those 5 or more years it'll still be supported software and app wise.

This is however not an Apple vs Android discussion. It comes down to personal preference. You're not going to change anyone who already have invested into the ecosystem and has already made up their mind.

Apple has never been about having the best specs for price, that’s an area already dominated in the android space as that’s all there largely is to differentiate on. Apple has and always will be about the experience, and no android handset has yet come close imho.

To use your analogy above, the $50000 car may not have the biggest engine and it may not have specs has good as they $17000 car - but boy is it a great car to drive and the after sales support is top notch.

Actually Apple is years ahead in their processor space. The new Snapdragon 845 doesn't come close to the Apple A11 Bionic.

See here for the full comparison.

The thing is - that has been beaten again. Apple is around 3yrs ahead in the processor space (at-least). So saying that Android phones have "better specs" is largely untrue. While Android phones may have more ram, more CPU cores, better screens etc they have benchmarked behind iOS devices going on years now. That is not to say the user will notice as phones these days are incredibly quick on both camps.

Again - this is not an iPhone and Android comparison, this topic is about new devices. Stay on topic guys and stop trying to compare (as this happens every single year).

I've noticed that the iPhone X has dropped to $1699 at all the main retailers. Is it worth coughing up an extra $200 for the Xs or will the X be ok?

I’m wondering a similar thing about the X vs the XR. I can’t really see the value in the X though, despite the better screen and the dual camera system. The 128GB XR will be $200 cheaper than the X, will have the better chip, a new camera system front and rear (albeit single on the back) and better resale value a year or two down the line.
