A friend of mine who buys ipads and iphones because he is a complete techno-phobe has a problem I can't fix either.

It's an ipad (running 9.3.5) has stopped accessing two IMAP email accounts he uses for work. Now this is basic stuff and the two accounts can be added to my android phone in under 30 seconds, but the ipad will just not verify the SMTP server.

Both accounts are using the same imap server which is mail.domain.com.

Both usernames and passwords are correct because we can open them in webmail and add them to my android phone.

We tried 3G and wifi, rebooted the ipad, deleted the outgoing servers, deleted the two accounts, but nothing.

When trying to enter a new account it just sits there on verifying and after a good five minutes it eventually says "Cannot Connect Using SSL". If we say create anyway it eventually puts us back to the settings screen. We then go into the SMTP server and add the details manually (mail.domain.com, Use SSL, username and password, port 465) again it just sits there on verifying until it says it can't connect.

What are we missing ?

Your friend is properly using iPad 2nd or 3rd generation which will only take a max of iOS 9.3.5. Anyway it sounds like that if these are work iPads connecting to a work IMAP mail server. The the work IT department have properly changed their SSL/TLS certificate requirements for newer certificates than iOS 9.3.5 have installed.

Best bet is he takes the iPads into the IT department and has a wee chat to the boffins and politely remind them that some employees are still using outdated iOS iDevices and they either take that into account in their security systems or they update their employee iDevices.cool

In the mean time delete the accounts again, reboot, setup the accounts again but ensure SSL is OFF. Not an ideal fix but should work till he speaks to his work IT boffins.

The mail app is too old methinks. Newer versions have vulns patched, if its failing on ssl negotiation then the work mail server requires your friend to use a newer client.

I wouldn't call them 'boffins', they're doing their jobs. Better than some places I've seen that don't update for half a decade...

I reckon they'd have SSL mandatory so disabling wouldn't work (I wouldn't use this for work regardless). Unless your friend can update his devices, he'd have to peruse the app store for a compatible third-party mail app. I'm sure theres an open source one out there.

Well boo, I've only heard it in derogatory context.
