Just found some incentives to keep our first generation iphones

Telecom and NZ Comms are working on there GSM networks. Where I live (rural) I get dodgy reception from vodafone, but when doing a search in the carrier selection menu Telecom NZ appeared.  Tried connecting to it and obviously failed but for a second my reception bars went nearly full and the EDGE icon appeared!  For those that don't know EDGE is enhanced GPRS and is capable of much faster speeds not sure how fast though.  Vodafone skipped EDGE and went straight from GPRS to 3G.

And iPhone 3Gs are having slight problems at the moment.

Apple has these issues when they release new products but they always fix it in the end.

It's just a shame that you're probably looking at ~9 months before the launch of the network.

Virtually all of Vodafone's sites are now EDGE capable but this is not enabled.

EDGE is a bit faster than GPRS - perhaps up to three or four time, but you will see it's about half of WCDMA in real life. From my experience with EDGE it provides some good speeds for basic tasks such as email, synchronisation to Exchange server or even web browsing.

Four times faster than GPRS sounds decent.  Good thing about EDGE is how it's going to be everywhere there's coverage, not just towns and cities.  I read somewhere online that telecom's gsm network is planned to launch before the end of 2008.  But I guess that might be just hopeful thinking.  There not releasing much to the media about it at all.

Launch date was supposed to be November 2008 but this has now been delayed with expectations (nothing official) that a launch will occur sometime around May/June 2009. A soft launch will still take place from the end of this year for inbound roamers and trial users.
