Undecided A friend of mine has also brought a 3g iphone from vodafone
It is running the latest firmwire 2.2

She would like to know what is the best way to jailbreak hers.
She (and I) have read alot of how to jailbreak the iphone.
There are to many to decide. Especially as we both are only new to iphones.

can some point us in the right direction on how to jailbreak iphone 3g

Quickpwn or the pwnage tool(osx) , both straight forward just follow the onscreen prompts.

I also would advise you to use QuickPwn. I personally have used it (im on windows)
and havent had any problems with it. All straight forward, click, click, click.

I'd advise against QuickPwn and suggest sticking to WinPwn or PwnageTool - especially if the phone hasn't been jailbroken before.  I've heard a lot of horror stories about QuickPwn.  Sometimes it works as Aaroona seems to have experiences, others it causes massive headaches.  Check with iphone-dev.org for help/news.

There's actually quite a few good reasons to. One being;

MMS support.

This is the ONLY reason at this point in time that >I< would jailbreak for (I have 1 jailbroken phone and a 'virgin' phone).
However if you like to customize your phone beyond the normal apple theme, then jailbreaking is required.

Obviously there is more reason that what I've given you, but this is my opinion.

If you wouldnt mind, could you please advise where to get WinPwn? I couldn't find it last time I looked for it.

Thanks

EDIT: ignore my senseless-ness
If I had bothered to do another search like i have now after posting, I would have found: www.winpwn.com

Happy new Year and all the best for 2009 to all geekzone friends.

Ok after much research and playing with our Iphones we both decided that jailbreaking the phone is not worth it.
there are too many sad stories out there of $1000 worth of paper weights.
Also the only thing I am missing out on is mms ( picture texting) and as I have set this up with vodafone to send all my pxt to their site. Where I can access them anyway I am happy.
I have accessed apps and have some fun stuff on the iphone. especially love the Sensi Dial.

After todays Quickpwn update the days of making a $1000 paper weight are pretty much over as now if you network lock it somehow you can unlock all iphones

Happy new year to you also :)

Yeah fair enough.
But just to let you know, it's unfortunate you won't be joining us on the Jailbroken iPhone community!
Also, if you follow all the instructions, there is no reason really why anything should go wrong.

I am yet to see a post that says "I followed the procedure word for word and it hasn't worked".

So when you are feeling a little more comfortable about it, let someone know and I'm sure someone would be able to point you in the right direction :)

Just bear in mind that if you've updated to OS 10.5.6 then it won't work, I had to use the flatmates macbook with 10.4.11 on it to do the job as DFU doesn't work properly under 10.5.6. (Unless you overwrite the 2 key updated files with earlier versions)

Other than that, it's a piece of cake. Press a few buttons, follow the easy instructions with pwnagetool, wait for a couple of minutes while it does its thing, fire up iTunes and restore the new firmware, wait another 5 minutes, then you're on your way. The longest bit is downloading the 250MB firmware update!

And don't bother running the unlock tool, it's not as if it's any use in NZ yet :)

Basically, once/if they add MMS and tethering support to the native firmware, I'll go back to using stock firmware, most of the Cydia apps have reasonable free alternatives from the appstore.

Hi everyone,

I have found this thread interesting and had a couple of questions of my own.  I use a MacBook which is using 10.5.4.  Am I able to jailbreak using this version or does it need to be older?  Also I have just updated to 2.2.1 on my phone.  Am I able to jailbreak from there or do I need to go back to an earlier version?  Like other I suppose I am apprehensive and as much as I like to thnk I am quite technical in my thinking, at times like this I realise I am really not!

Cheers Lil
