Hang on, back in 2007 it was going to be at least 20 yrs away - they still have until 2027 to fulfil that promise

If I recall from several years ago, Google decided to bypass the Telcos because the Telcos weren't too interested in implementing it.

Forbes and Washington Post with articles about iOS 18 and RCS disappointments USA side carriers etc.
Verge has a more balanced view with improvements available on RCS enabled carriers
Imo more telcos will look at enabling RCS now it's fully available in iOS 18. Actual contents of Apple final releases tend to be a bit unpredictable. Now it is final more will consider it.
In the past NZ telco market has not been particularly competitive around carrier features and sometimes looks a little bit cartel-ish in that respect.
There might be cause for optimism. Skinny would be the logical first mover with the most to gain I think.
Didn't Vodafone enable this (or something like it) on their network many years ago? It was short lived before they switched it off. I rember you could get confimation of texts being recieved etc. I think it caused too much network traffic at the time.

If I'm not mistaken then I believe that was "Message+". The T&Cs are still online.
Yeah but that was their own client, not the default SMS app that RCS uses these days.

There was no app to install. It was the standard SMS app. I think this was even pre all the andriod phones. I had this going on a Nokia phone. I think pre 2010, so a long time ago.

The one you're thinking of was RCSe (a cut down version) marketed by Vodafone Group as Joyn. It did require an app in most cases as it was not supported in device firmware.

As above. There was an app. The quote I posted is a copy and paste from their terms and conditions.

It's disappointing that RCS is not available from any NZ telcos. I use MMS a bit with people who have iPhones (I have a Pixel) and we exchange pictures. For a number of reasons I don't want to move to a messaging app (after SMS is pretty universal) and it would have been good to be able to exchange higher quality pictures
