In the USA AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile app appear to be simply using Google's Jibe (jibecloud.net). I haven't seen someone extract the global list but at a guess if these three are, a good percentage globally probably have done similar.

Off topic a little bit, but iOS 18 is supposed to have call recording, and this doesn't appear to be enabled for NZ carriers yet either? (Well for me on Skinny at least).

There was no app to install. It was the standard SMS app. I think this was even pre all the andriod phones. I had this going on a Nokia phone. I think pre 2010, so a long time ago.

The one you're thinking of was RCSe (a cut down version) marketed by Vodafone Group as Joyn. It did require an app in most cases as it was not supported in device firmware.

This is what I was remembering, it was just a delivery/read confimation.

Oh! Right ... well, those are just specially formatted SMS messages, which means vendors typically count them in the SMS TPS license. Turning them on roughly doubles your license use -- $$$$.

I guess I should have checked on Geekzone first... just had an infuriating chat with a customer services rep at Mighty Mobile trying to figure out if they are planning to support RCS. They basically had no idea.

Also, One NZ don't appear to support it yet, and neither do Skinny. None of them have anything useful in their help centres. Searching for "RCS" returns no helpful results.

Is this something that's "coming soon" - i.e. is it being worked on? (Not wanting anyone to commit to a date.)

I would assume that its more of a not going to bother with it type of thing than a coming soon thing.

Well this is an epic disappointment.  If I'm reading this thread correctly, there is no RCS support in NZ and no clear idea or even hope of if/when it will come.

This article I read earlier this year (sorry it's paywalled and I cancelled my Listener Subscription a few months ago) seemed to suggest it was going to work for everyone, but I guess not

In case it helps..

For iOS to Android RCS there is Beeper. Beeper supports:

- WhatsApp
- Facebook Messenger
- Twitter
- Android SMS
- Google Messages (SMS/RCS)
- Telegram
- Signal
- Matrix
- Slack
- Google Chat
- Instagram
- IRC (Libera.chat)
- Discord
- LinkedIn

For Android to iMessage there is BlueBubbles. It is open source and not simple for average users. It also supports Windows and Linux.

With Google Cloud starting in NZ now I wonder if that will make RCS support simpler for NZ carriers.

This is the interesting section.

But it also sees how regulators are scrutinising its market domination, particularly in the European Union which last year passed a sweeping new piece of legislation, the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

A key plank of that law requires large tech companies to make their services interoperable with other platforms. Apple’s move to embrace RCS seems very much aimed at satisfying the new EU regulation

So Apple opened up RCS in their app but they have no obligation to force the carriers to implement it. And if he EU carriers didn't, then the regulators could hardly go after Apple.

@gzt how would Google cloud have any impact on RCS support for carriers?

Also, can anyone else here answer about RCS at the carrier level interfering with carriers costs/profitability?  Almost all plans I look at offer unlimited texts as a 'feature' of the plan, or lower tier plans charge for texts beyond the first 100.  If RCS was deployed does that mean the carrier wouldn't be able to track/charge for texts because RCS can leverage WiFi/Internet connections?  Alternately, does RCS potentially put a heavier load on their network with allowing all the 'rich' features like higher resolution photos, emojis, read receipts, etc....?

I don't understand the mechanics of RCS well enough and I wonder if the reason carriers are not offering/supporting it here is conflicted by their profit/cost models?

Google RCS seems to use their own services

https://jibe.google.com/

That is why I guess it was relatively easy to get RCS to work between Android devices - just have the messaging app talk via Jibe.

It doesn't. Google's RCS has always been cloud based.

I don't think it will shock you to learn - not least because I've already discussed it on Geekzone before - that building an RCS service costs money (several $M). How much extra are you willing to pay on your monthly bill to get it? Nothing at all because you already get WhatsApp/Signal/Messenger/etc. for free?

Now you know why there weren't any RCS servers in NZ just waiting for the Apple launch.
