Hi guys, 
just wanting to know some thoughts from you guys or know of anyone who has actually experienced it... 


my idea is that.. now the iphone is available from apple store... 
i am wanting to buy it from Australia to save money but also with add applecare with them for 100$ which will give you 2 years of warranty anywhere.. meaning i can take it to magnum mac store here in auckland and get it serviced if it gets stuffed up.. but knowing apple.. it should not be a problem... :P 


what do you guys reckons?

The iPhone doesn't have an international warranty, so if you buy one in Australia, regardless of Apple Care or not you will have to send it back there for repairs.

but in australia they say you can get warranty for the ones that re bought from NZ...
as they have the same model numbers.. as in that its the same unlocked batch that apple has distributed. .with A-Tick on them...
and due to Aust having Apple store.. you can take NZ bought iphones and get it fixed there....
so i am just wanting to know about the reciprical of this here in nz...

From the iPhone 1 year limited Warranty T&C's

"Apple may restrict service to the country where Apple or its authorized distributors

originally sold the hardware product, and provide warranty service"



From the iPhone Applecare Extended T&C's

"Apple may restrict service provided under this Plan to the

Covered Equipment's original country of purchase."



It is based on country of purchase and over here you may be required to show your receipt so personally I wouldn't do it, just in case.

this is the forum... i will be asking them when i go there on monday at apple store :) and will post.. and see what they say..
cos due to the fact that nz not having offcial apple store.. we are affectively part of Apple Aus...
hence for them (as in Aust) they get the same treatment....

From what I've heard before with iPhone 3G you would take to a store to claim and they would direct you to Vodafone. If not bought from them then you wouldn't have warranty cover.

Now that Apple is selling the iPhone 3GS directly here I am not sure. You will have to ask Apple support directly. If you find anything please keep us posted.

I'd hate for you to get it thinking you can, have a problem and then not be covered unless you send it to Aussie. If you were to buy from Apple NZ online store it would cost you $64 more than if you bought it from Aussie, worth it?? (based on 16GB 3GS)

hehe... yeah i know what you mean.. :P its just that i do go there frequently... due to having family there... and plan to make the shift to go abroad... so its not really gonna work either way! :P haha.. cos i dont plan to go to aus...
so i might be screwed regardeless... but surely.. if i was in a foreign country.. and wanted my phone fixed.. out of my pocket.. they would tho wouldnt they?

There is no retail store to go back to if it needs repairs... On the apple nz support page it says to go to Vodafone for service but they might say no coz I didn't actually get the phone from them...

Purchased an Airport Extreme and the power supply was DOA, rest was ok.  Apple promptly arranged for courier to collect item and provide either replacement or full refund.   
If I had purchased from local I could then just take it back to the store.  This time I opted for refund and purchased from Magnum Mac later that day.


Maybe they might provide similar support?

ps... having AppleCare (3yr) on most of our Apple Products (including AEBS and AppleTV)... was frustrating to know that AppleCare is not offered for iPhone 3G.... and the warranty for my iPhone expires tomorrow...
That was a quick 12mths!

I've heard that you need to pay an additional fee to get an Australian phone unlocked. Is there any truth to that?

Edit: Never mind, Apple sells unlocked phones from its own website.

no they are selling it unlocked via Apple Store just like they are here with Apple On-line store... am in process of finding it out with Apple NZ... (well phone call.. doesnt hurt to ask them! :P) and once I know.. i will keep you all posted..
