Behodar: I laughed when I saw "unlocked, usable on any carrier" followed by "using a different type of SIM". Mixed signals, anyone?

It appears to be a way for ATT to restict their $30 pre pay unlimited data plans to this device only, I think some other AT&T customers are going ot be steamed at paying $60 /month for 5GB.

Mind you I suspect that "unlimited" will get soft capped by "reasonable use" conditions fairly quickly.

E-mail, Internet, gaming, reading books, newspapers, office type apps., remote control, video editing, skyping (with video eventually) ,endless apps. like an iphone etc etc

And if you say, "I have a PC that can do that.", you've missed the point.

Ok ok, I like apple stuff...I really do, but I am finding a hard time coming up with a use case for this...If I want to read an eBook I'd much rather use an eInk screen having played with sony e-readers in the states. Its lighter than my MPB, but quite a bit less powerful. All my video is DivX and MP4 and it all takes space so 16GB isn't enough, and 64 is too expensive. My e71 plays podcasts and so does my shuffle. Or, do I just not get it?

I guess the attempt here is a universal device that does pretty much everything in the same way that smart phones have taken on GPS, camera roles etc. That will involve compromises until screen technolgy etc catches up.

(may I say I'm not comfortable defending Apple products here but lets have an open mind.)

Sounds pretty underwhelming to me.

It must be the ugliest product apple have ever released.

By "micro sim" do they just mean normal everyday sim card?

Or is there a new version of the sim card.

Since Asus does the Macbook shells, do you think they'll be making the Apple iPad shells?

Also....poor Asus decided to let their "Eee Pad" out of the shell today as well. Very bad marketing day to release info, it's been swallowed(or soaked...) up by the iPad details

sbiddle: There are three things that stop it from being a near perfect Gen I device..

Multitasking, 4:3 aspect screen and built in camera.

I dont get this obsession everyone has with devices needing a built in camera. But the other two i agree on.

Nope, there is a new version :(

looks like another bit of proprietary stuff, till other phone manufacturers start using them:

Mmmm, most interesting thing for me in the announcement (or on the apple website as one of them wasn't mentioned) was the support for BT keyboard(s) (and maybe not not just the apple one, if I have read it right), and camera/memorycard adapter.

"And because iPad has built-in Bluetooth 2.1, it?ll work with an Apple Wireless Keyboard, too. There?s also a Camera Connection Kit that lets you import photos from a camera or SD card."

Presumably an apple BT keyboard uses a standard BT HID profile?

Therefore my hope is my iphone will gain a keyboard (without a JB), and a way for me to upload photos from my digicam/SLR while out and about.

damnit, i was sold on it, till I asked my Mac guru mate about it and saw this:

TV and Video
Support for 1024 x 768 with Dock Connector to VGA adapter; 576p and 480p with Apple Composite A/V Cable, 576i and 480i with Apple Composite A/V Cable.....

Where's the 1080P :(
H.264 video up to 720p

http://www.apple.com/ipad/spec.../

I rate the USB charging system though, wish current netbooks had that feature

stuzzo: they have to be far better at doing some key tasks... better than the laptop, better than the smartphone."

"What kind of tasks? Browsing the web. Doing email. Enjoying and sharing pics. Watching videos. Enjoying music. Playing games. Reading ebooks."

"If there's gonna be a third category, it has to be better at these tasks -- otherwise it has no reason for being."

Steve Jobs sums up the reason for the iPads existence.

Sorry but how is this better for any of those tasks bar ebooks than a laptop/pc?

The only possible thing it has is mobility through smaller form factor and a touch screen interface.

Mobility:
- Netbooks have a far greater repository of productivity tools, applications games etc - many are freely available. All this whilst having comparable battery life and with a 3G dongle the same level of connectivity.

- Smartphones, my i8910 arguable does all of these things pretty bloody well, plus I can stick it in my pocket use it as a phone and it has a 8MP camera. Sure it has a smaller screen but if the device was larger then it wouldnt pocket friendly.

Touch Screen:
- Netbooks are already out there with touch screens and have been for awhile - if tactile feedback is you thing they also come with a *keyboard*.
- Smartphone, do not really need to say anything here do I.

Lack of multitasking - fail, complete and total fail. I cannot put enough emphasis on this point.

Aspect ratio - nuisance but *shrug*

Lack of camera - well given you cannot multitask this makes Skype a pretty crappy proposition anyhow. Why would you keep you Skype client if you are waiting for a call when you cannot do anything else on your device.

For me itd be a god send.

I have a toddler and an infant at the moment, so getting to the PC (which is in the garage) isnt always possible.
Having an iPad, I could sit on the couch , do what i want to be doing and watch them as well - a laptop is too bulky, and a netbook is too small.

Other uses :
Remote control for media PC and other "aware" devices.
Kitchen PC - all your recipes etc at your fingertips
Car PC - entertainment for the kids on long journeys.

Id be putting the thing to a lot of use :D
