According to Apple you are meant to type on it like a traditional keyboard. Good luck hunched over the thing lying flat in desk typing on it.. Can picture it now, with the occasional facepalm thrown in for good measure.

Depending on the Exch Rate when local prices points are set, I would expect the uppper figures of your estaimates to be close to the prices. ( although the 3G model may get some form of provider kickback, but they will have to stop charging like a wounded bull to get customers)

Plasmaglows: If you look on the apple website you can get an adaptor for the iPad that takes USB or SD apparently so you can copy pictures onto the iPad.

A few others have commented and I also can't help but wonder why Apple consider SD and USB support so important that they're making their own external hardware, yet don't build the interfaces into the hardware.

I also consider the lack of camera a huge loss. Video is becoming a big part of our daily lives, whetehr it be recording and uploading content to YouTube, streaming video video to ustream, or taking part in a SIP or Skype videoca/video conference. The device has the perfect form factor for these applications yet it's missing the hardware for it.

I can see the market for a clipon webcam already.

The goal to have something between a netbook and smartphone is a good idea, but someone needs to re think the size to create a different platform.

My wish, something small enough to hold in one hand, large enough screen for reasonable browsing and not to have to really concentrate to hit the right key with a touch keypad.

Solution 6"x4" size i.e. 7.25 dia screen, or other words quarter A4 (A6 size). Try it fold a piece of A4 into 4.

I know to big for pocket size, but then you could have an associated hip clothes range with appropriate iPockets to go with your iPad, another money maker.

Apple should market it towards replacing the netbook market as well as bridging the gap.

My wish, something small enough to hold in one hand, large enough screen for reasonable browsing and not to have to really concentrate to hit the right key with a touch keypad.

Pretty much impossible till roll-up screens come along... or is there some another innovative device that fits a big screen into a small package?

Anyone else hear that thunder?

I don't know why there is some hostility towards the device? Take it on it's merits, theres no point bagging it for what it hasn't got. Sure be disappointed if you were going to buy it and find it doesn't have a camera that you wanted, don't buy it if thats the deal breaker.

  I personally think that it's going to have a good deal of uses for me and all in a single device. Some guy posted that his MBP does some things better, get a sony reader if you want books and two of his mp3 players do nicely. How much did you pay for that? Do you really carry all that around with you at once? No? Then maybe this isn't so bad for for people that use all those gadgets after all. I know I do all of those things in one outing.

  I can think of at least three things I have been thinking of getting over the last few months but backed down on because of price. An ebook reader, a photo frame and a portable media player (just because I had to do a long trip with the kids). That's just touching the surface of what I would use it for. It seems that this would cost about the same of those three devices and do a lot more so it's making sense for me.

  Please, if your so anti it don't call me or others apple lovers, I am being far more balanced than your anti ipad stance.

I would imagine that a roll up device would use some sort of clear silicon, however the processor and battery would need to decrease in size, or also be flexible too. Technology just isn't there yet.

I am personally quite disappointed in the ipad. I thought they would call it the ipad, becasue they already have the ibook, and ithe name fits it well. My disappointment is that it isn't muiltitasking, it has a thick ugly frame, it is quite large and heavy. Heck the fake mockups on the internet were better looking. No camera, for future gesture navigation. It just uses the same sort of icon layout as the ipodtouch, it should at least have widgets on the home screen. A 1024x768 resolution, this means in portrait mode, many websites built to 1024 wide screens, won't display properly unless scaled down to 768 wide (which I suspect is what it does). I would have expected a higher resolution screen, many higher range netbooks do. LCD screen instead of OLED. No electrostatic stylus, with handwriting recognition(even the newton had this), being able to write on it would be a major selling point, especially in the medical profession.

I do think that people will buy it, but it is a bit like their 'air' notebook, which is a confused device. I also consider this a confused device. I don't get excited by it, like I was with the ipod touch/iphone, anfd it doesn't have the wow factor. It actually doesn't really do anything more than an ipod touch, and the ipod touch you can fit in your pocket.

Obviously with software they can improve it in the future, but I wouldn't get it until the 3rd generation at least.

I think apple have cut costs in producing this device, so they can get into the ebook market, by being able to supply a low cost ebook reader that people can afford and match their competitors inprice. However it isn't a good screen for ebook reading, Eink is far easier on the eyes. I actually think they may come out with a more premium and professional version with heaps of new features within the next year and an oled screen. This release is more like the original old fat ipod, and in a few years time it will look really dated (if it doesn't already)

Looking at the specs, I think the micro-SIM problem is nothing that can't be solved with a pair of scissors or craft knife. And if the demand for the iPad shows up, it won't be long before operators make micro-SIMs available. Pain in the butt of course. And something that only Apple would have the arrogance/confidence/vision to impose on the marketplace. A bit like dropping the floppy in favour of CDs, and then dropping the CD in favour of wifi/USB.

That was me. I am an a apple fanboi, but with all the focus on things like this I wish that apple would put into making its system specs a bit more compeditive and giving things like the mini a proper upgrade and market as an htpc. I think this may go the same way as the boom box for iPod they brought out a few years ago. I paid 699 for my e71, and 79 for the the shuffle. the MPB I don't think should be included in the list because even with an iPad you still need something with horses under the hood to do every day heavy lifting and use of the optical drive. By the time the iPad comes to NZ, add on the cost of the extra 3g module I would say I would be ahead by a few hundy. I do however regret that I didn't get an eReader in NY when I was over there because the eInk screens are fantastic for reading off of - much easier on the eyes than LCD.

I think people are just disappointed after all the hype, because it could have been so much more. Becuase it has been built to be cheap, a lot of the features people were wanting have been left out. However do remember that future versions will improve it a lot, as they want people to upgrade. Think of this as the model T ford.

I think the current version is good at doing lots, but if you buy a seperate device for each of the things it does, those separate devices will perform better, apart from perhaps a photo frame. I think this is probably the best photo frame on the market. However ebook devices such as the kindle are better ebook readers, because they use special eink, which is easy on the eyes and consumes little power. Reading a book on your laptop(which is the same type of screen as the ipad) isn't easy on the eyes. An ipod touch is a better portable media device, becuase it is portable(put it in your pocket).

This device seems to be possible for everything, but perfect for very little. People will however buy it for the apple experience and it is a nice looking device.

Heck I'm still using 1st Gen iPod Touch 32GB.. and it's doing great! *hehe* iPad would work well in our house, and it's a welcome-"upgrade" for me to move from iPod Touch to iPad for my daily basic internet usage.

Internet is my backyard...
