chiefie: Heck I'm still using 1st Gen iPod Touch 32GB.. and it's doing great! *hehe* iPad would work well in our house, and it's a welcome-"upgrade" for me to move from iPod Touch to iPad for my daily basic internet usage.

You however can't just stick it in your pocket and go down the street listening to a podcast.

@Robbyp I didn't say I'm giving up my iPod Touch. iPad will supplement our devices at home. Beside I'm already carrying a man-bag... not too big a deal if I must carry it with me.

Ham: But it doesn't support Flash. soo many sites use flash, browsing experience is not the same without it.

Next time apple please add: flash support, skype style cam, maybe a cd drive for adding music to itunes. then it will be perfect for cumputer nubs.

You must be kidding right?
You have described a MacBook.

CD Drive? Power hungry and large! iPad syncs with iTunes, so you would normally rip your music on your base machine anyway.

Flash support... YouTube is en route to being entirely H264 soon, no need for flash there. Flash games... yes this is true, but there are often equivalent games free in the App store.

Camera? Yes this would be good.

Personally my main gripe is no cellular phone function. (with bluetooth headset) this would suit me fine, I don't use the phone functionality of my iPhone anywhere near as much as email, web and text.

Cheers,
Joseph.

@RobbyP oh I did say for my daily internet usage, which is what I pretty much does when I'm home with WiFi and on iPod Touch. iPad can be put on charge and be used as digital photo frame - we can save lots of space by digitise our film-based photo albums.

Oh there's leather folio/case, so it'll look "professional" as well :-D Not much different than carrying MacBook Air or Sony Vaio-X... Just that it (iPad) has quite specific set of tasks and operations compare to a laptop.

Wherever I go (work or home) I have full PC or laptop, that I can survive operating on, but when I wanna sit on the couch at home, relax and leisurely browsing internet, I like it light and easy to use.

Don't worry man, nothing wrong with Man-bags :) I own two now

Just upgraded to a leather one to carry my laptop which I'm ordering in a couple of weeks(old one only fitted my 1005HA, new one needs to fit a bigger one + headphones + hat)

@RobbyP and ScottStevens.

I agree with both of you on some points.  To me this will supplement my iphone and I have a hidden agenda, I will use it to develop some applications specifically for me so it fills in  other needs.

It's always going to be hard to beat the hype but still, taken case by case I think it stacks up pretty well.  Feature for feature I wouldn't expect it to beat the best of breed dedicated machines, i.e. bookreader for e-ink, ipod for form factor etc.   I also was underwhelmed but getting past that it still looks worthwhile to someone who was probably going to buy those things separately.

Add it all up and it's pretty darn good though, how much does  an entry cost book reader cost, same for a portable dvd player, psp etc.   For people who have or want all of these then this certainly looks good from a price point of view.

132dpi/ppi screen isn't going to look to bad.  I can imagine it will be a really good book reader.  I can image a lot of people will think that it's good enough when all the other features are taken in to consideration that a stand alone device is not justified.

And for my own selfish needs, I reckon it's going to make a pretty good dashboard/touch screen interface for racing/flying simulators :)

As some have 3G, phone functionality could be added via a future software upgrade. Remember the ipodtouch has skype and fring via apps, so apple could easily add phone functionality to the ipad in the future.

Yes, but what does it offer you over the ipod touch. It is quite an expense just to view websites in the morning when a netbook (if you have one) will do the same thing. If you didn't have a netbook already, then this could be an alternative, although it will only run some software. A netbook will run most things and os more adaptable, and you can connect a netbook up to a big display. You can't watch movie you download onto an ipad, and plug it into a big screen. To me, it appears that apple are targeting the computer illiterate market to buy things around the istore, and it is somewhat feature lacking. YOu accept those lack of features on an ipodtouch due to it's size, but will people accept those limitations on a net bbok sized tablet. That doesn't mean I wouldn't buy one of the future generations, as I love apple products, and the experience.

@RobbyP, I have laptop that I can hook up to bigger screen, heck I have PS3 BluRay and big screen if I wanna watch something on big screen. I got PC... So you can see I got other systems to do more complex tasks if I want to.

What it got over iPod Touch? Bigger screen with ease of use of iPod Touch. It will work for me, but certainly it isn't a glove that will fit your hand, and not other people's for whatever they're hoping for.

The pre-announcement hype was huge, but Apple had never hinted before the announcement of what they'll deliver... so you can't say you're disappointment, you could only say you're mislead by the hype.

Microsoft/HP and others had their go with TabletPC and it didn't work well... heck HP Slate probably the closest to iPad for competition (and there's other manufacturers too) but they all do have the bulk of Windows OS - although that can be a merit of its own - but it hasn't worked for Windows XP, Vista, and maybe 3rd times the charm that it may work for 7 as tablet PC. Regardless Microsoft had tried and tried again to make TabletPC appealling and affordable, but manufacturers did not play ball to make it affordable to consumers.

HP TM2 may be my next laptop+tablet feature as I like the sound of ODD-less laptop, but I recently have new laptop so I'm not looking at that sector of the market.

iPad on the other hand fit my usage as a bigger version of iPod Touch for my daily usage, then I can satisfy with a normal smartphone for calling and txting. I don't have to get iPhone now, just iPad be ideal.

I will probably get one, just not this generation. I have to think whether I need another gadget at the moment, and pay the best part of $1k which doesn't provide anything new over what I have currently got (an ipod touch), including a new netbook which is similar in size and weight and has a esy to use keyboard. I am guessing the next version will have a camera, for skype calling, as the prototypes leaked onthe net show a version that had a camera at the top. The ipod touch was also supposed to have a camera but was removed at the last minute. Hopefully the newer versions will trim down the size, by reducing the ugly fat bezel, and include an OLED higher resolution screen. I think it is a good start, but doesn't grab me as a must get item yet, like the ipod touch did. If I didn't have an ipod touch or iphone, I would probably get it now.

TBH I think the thing is just an iphone at a4 size. Waste of time if you ask me. Don't know why they are running iphone OS on it. Maybe a trimmed version of leopard would be a better idea

Interestingly... Just watching Steve Job's keynote on iPad, I'm curious to know how they able to show remote screen action on their big screen?

Apple/iPhone developers, do you know the secret tool for that??

Apparently you can do that with a jailbroken iphone too. In this case it was probably a specially made ipad, as the one they will be selling is locked down to prevent that.
