jasonh: @RobbyP and ScottStevens.

I agree with both of you on some points.  To me this will supplement my iphone and I have a hidden agenda, I will use it to develop some applications specifically for me so it fills in  other needs.

Not withoiut an up to date iPhone Developer Program subscription you won't.  It runs iPhone OS, not Mac OS X, so - you guessed it - it only runs apps sourced from the iTunes App Store unless you have a provisioning profile matching the iPad and application.

Looks like they just took one of those digital photo frames and loaded the iphone os onto it. What an underwhelimg un-revolutionary waste of space it is.

I was never in the market for this but my disappointments are:

no gps, no back facing camera, no voice and no multitasking.

GPS for maps obvoiusly.

The other three would have made it the ideal couch device. Skype on in the background, video conferencing when needed and surfing the internet in the meantime. Voice calls if they came through.

No flash- html5 will mean it is not needed but there is probably a few years before that.

Lets wait till version 2. The first iphone was a bit feature less as well.

What an interesting and busy thread - to be expected given the hype and anticipation I guess.

I think the device will succeed in terms of quick uptake as there is already a well established user base for Apple products and a sound knowledge and familiarity of how the devices work.

I agree with many that the iPad offers the promise of being able to do a number of things well.

It did not deliver anything super innovative in a techinical sence for me (and a number of others I suspect) so in that regard, and given the hype (well fueled by Apple's game of silence) pre launch it's understandable some are saying 'is this it?'.

Jobs reckons there's a middle ground for his iPad to occupy in the tech landscape. Being in the middle can be a furtile place to be (and grow) so long as you clearly define your boundaries and don't stray.

I think the big issue here for Apple will be to convince the public that purchasing a unit offers tangible benefits beyond what a macbook or iphone/ipod touch can deliver.

The acid is on Apple to spell out what the boundaries are for the iPad and why Mr & Mrs average should seriously consider purchasing one.

You can only sell units to groupies and early adopters on the basis of 'new & cool' for so long and then when that well starts to dry up how then do you keep the sales rolling in?

Oh, did you notice the corporate tie ups - the Trek movie clip, the New York Times in the Jobs demo and product stills etc?

Some big $$ and even more 'under the radar' mashups, deals etc. are going on right now in that sandpit - stay tuned for a few big announcements over the coming months.

CJPhoto, it does have GPS.
I worried about no multitasking on my iPhone, but seriously with the speed of these devices now days, you barely notice switching into and out of most apps, apart from maybe games.

I believe the GPS is only on the Wifi+3G versions, and not on the just wifi versions.

The multitasking is needed more for if you are running an app, such as a streaming music station app, or talking through fring, and you want to listen/talk, while you write an email in the email app. You also can't use two apps on the same screen or overlay widgets, so you can do multiple things at the same time, which I thought you maybe able to do. Possibly future versions will. It's early days for this, and this is only the first verison.

Interesting thought crossed my mind - no handwriting recognition, a la Tablet PC. This is a negative if you are a student - tried taking notes on a virtual keyboard?

Also, what a shift... Apple announced year result of almost US$50 billion a couple of days ago - and today announces it's the largest mobile company in the world - which is obviously includes iPod, iPhone, Macbook. Yes, they count laptops, which technically are "mobile" are not really "mobile" (in the cellular sense). Actually not even the iPods are "mobile" in the cellular sense...

But hey, anything to create the Reality Distortion Field.

That TM only covers a few classes for building, not mobile or electronic goods.

Yeah, but the way Apple is they will likely attack them for that. Certain trademarks are considered "Famous Marks" and apply to ALL classes of goods. For example, I think "Coca-Cola" is considered a Famous Mark.

Yeah, I would have liked this feature but wasn't expecting it. Comes down to screen technolgy I think. I have seen prototypes that combine capacitive and resistive features (multi-touch & stylus) but probably not ready for mainstream production yet.

http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/27/stantum-shows-off-resistive-multitouch-slate-pc-were-awed-agai/

Also perhaps the feeling it might be a bit "fiddly" and not match with Apple's idea of the simple interface.

An interesting note: in this morning's Dom Post business section they ran a small article on teh iPad. They stated it will be available in March and the base model will be $705.

Glib currency conversion by a johnny-no-stars reporter or inside info do you think?

There's no way they'd sell it in NZ without a markup on $$ conversion.
