peteflynn: An interesting note: in this morning's Dom Post business section they ran a small article on teh iPad. They stated it will be available in March and the base model will be $705.

I would bet the former. I remember pundits betting on iphone pricing at th e$800-900 mark, and freaked out when it hit at $1200-$1300.

It will be $800-900 for the basic, and Apple will offer it online for $50 less than retailers just like the 3GS.

sbiddle: I also consider the lack of camera a huge loss. Video is becoming a big part of our daily lives, whetehr it be recording and uploading content to YouTube, streaming video video to ustream, or taking part in a SIP or Skype videoca/video conference. The device has the perfect form factor for these applications yet it's missing the hardware for it.

A inbuilt camera will come as a future update as per Apple's well known and consistent strategy of drip feeding new features.

I am guessing the price for the base model will be $NZ850.
Based on the fact that the US iPad price ($499) is half the price of a MacBook ($999) and the NZ price of a MacBook is $1699. This assumes the exchange rate remains similar to when the MacBooks price was set. Never know what Apple will do though.

Smells a little of self centered importance, with some b/s thrown in for good measure.

Huh?!? So we get massive storage, wickedly fast CPU's but still cant multitask?!? WTF? Im not a retard, I can do more than 1 thing at once.

I still dont see the ipad in its current guise, revolutionizing anything. Love the idea, and the potential, just not the delivery.

I recently got a new netbook (Harvey Norman raincheck) . Great machine but it took several hours to load and set up all the software I wanted. Then the antivirus partitioned the hard drive which I didn't want so had to download a disk partition utility to change it etc etc

We may feel our ability to manipulate all the features of a PC makes us good geeks but isn't there an enormous loss of productivity often happening as well. I'm not saying the PC is out the door just yet but surely there are better approaches. Should a person just doing home or office applications really have to worry about file systems or windows updates or anti-virus or whatever system pop up window occurs?

One thing to keep in mind about the battery life. If you watch the keynote and read between the lines of what Steve jobs is saying.

He was watching movies while on a flight for 10 hours.

This will mean airplane mode. No 3g or wifi or Bluetooth. I would imagine the battery life while surfing the net will be a few hours less once it's on wifi or 3g

this is what written on the apple website :

*Testing conducted by Apple in January 2010 using preproduction iPad units and software. Testing consisted of full battery discharge while performing each of the following tasks: video playback, audio playback, and Internet browsing using Wi-Fi. Video content was a repeated 2-hour 23-minute movie purchased from the iTunes Store. Audio content was a playlist of 358 unique songs, consisting of a combination of songs imported from CDs using iTunes (128-Kbps AAC encoding) and songs purchased from the iTunes Store (256-Kbps AAC encoding). Internet over Wi-Fi tests were conducted using a closed network and dedicated web and mail servers, browsing snapshot versions of 20 popular web pages, and receiving mail once an hour. All settings were default except: Wi-Fi was associated with a network; the Wi-Fi feature Ask to Join Networks and Auto-Brightness were turned off. Battery life depends on device settings, usage, and many other factors. Battery tests are conducted using specific iPad units; actual results may vary.
