puggy: Update seemed to have gone really quick, just missing sevice provider settings like APN settings, Tethering and voice mail.  Have set the APN and Vociemail back up manually but still not tethering.  Have restored twice, have tried just loading the ipcc files via iTunes, eg: run the code in Termial, then load iTunes and hold alt and click restore, tried unlockit, rebooting, probably the 101 so called solutions on the net, but still no tethering.  It does something but no tethering.  Wouldn't mind so much but sold my Vodem stick just last month so this is really, really annoying, need to buy a vodem stick yet again.

Can't wait for the new phone to arrive in NZ will just buy that and hope that fixes it.

Out of the 6 phones around the office 3 are the same problem and 3 work fine, really random anyone else lose Tethering etc?

I had the same issue, seems something in my backup is stuffed. If I do a clean restore everything works fine.

I had absolutely no issues whatsoever with my install.

It was quick (ish) painless and easy.

Ham: Since upgrading I can no longer use my iPhone with the JVC stereo in my car, it plays about 5 seconds of the first track of the first album and then freezes. I have tried restoring and still no good... Not impressed.

Anyone else having this issue?

Yeah i had the same, hard reset sorted it out. Hold home and lock buttons, sorted it out.

Tried this, now it says "Accessory not supported"

jaymz: I have been rather interested in what the "multi-tasking" was going to be like in iOS4 since talk of it's release. I have to say, I am dissapointed to hear that it is not true multi-tasking. iOS4 simply pauses the application while it runs up the other application. It is a pitty they didn't enable true multi-tasking in my opinion, it would have made the iPhone a much more attractive "smart" phone.

That's an oversimplification.  Yes, it pauses the app, or saves its state as they like to call it.  It also allows several API's to be utilised by the application while it is in the background, meaning that for the needs of the user it appears very much as though the application is still running - while not over utilising the cpu or memory, or the battery for that matter. Those API's being:

Background Audio - so you can keep playing your audio apps while in another app (Last.fm, Pandora, AllRadio, etc)
VoIP - so Skype or Fring or whatever app you use can be running and available to receive calls while it's not open.
Background Location - So navigation apps can continue while you switch back and forth to other apps.
Push notifications - we know this one already
Local notifications - skips the need to use a central server for notifications
Task finishing - lets an app finish what it's doing when you close it to do something else (downloading a file from dropbox for example)
Fast App Switching - lets you switch back and forth from one app to another without needing to navigate the home screens.

Is there something more you want from multitasking that these services aren't providing?

I have just noticed that the pinch to zoom feature works much more smoothly than before. It really feels like a big improvement.

i updated my 32gb 2g ipod that was not jailbroken. have to say that i was disapointed that they striped it back so much. i knew there was no multitasking but i thought that the wallpapers would work.

also not impressed with iBooks. its close to unusable took close to a min for any buttons to load first time. just had the empty book shelf. also takes a while to load the book before you can change pages. would of liked to be able to get current books. guess the book store wont be fully on untill the ipad launches.

Has anyonne else noticed reduced battery life?

I charged mine overnight last night, unplugged at 8am, and after 19min of usage and 2.5 hrs standby its down to 81%.

It used to last 2-3 days with this usage.. At this rate it won't even make one.

I think i might return it before the warranty runs out next month

Im actually getting much better battery on my 3GS.  By 5pm I used to be down to 20% but now I'm around 45% with lots of use on the train commute etc.

Anecdotally I think iOS 4 has improved my battery life also. However both before and after the upgrade I have noticed my battery draining heavily overnight when the device is unused. My theory is that the battery charge is susceptible to the extreme cold temperatures that I've had at my place recently, but I'm not totally sure about that.

I had been using trapster but closed it down.  Later that day I heard speed camera ahead.  So background still allows the app work for those apps that are updated.

I have also seen a reduction in battery life.  Initially this was because of the issues with Google sync I think.  It has been better since but still not as good but it could be all the apps working in the background when I dont expect them to be doing anything but they are.  I have now started manually closing down apps from working in the background.

Like others, I've seen a modest increase in battery life.

Quite happy.

Ok we managed to get our tethering back.  It seems the 3 of us with issues also had trouble downloading the update with it forever timing out.  We have all re-downloaded and yet again done a restore as a new phone.  Yay its all back, excpet contacts, text messages etc due to the restore as new and having done it so many time the backups have just disappeared which is annoying but at least we have tethering and pxt etc.

As for battery life those of us on 3gs seem to have better battery life but those on the older 3g complain it worse, propbably just their batteries getting old.

So after all that, it seem to be a decent upgrade with the phone running faster longer battery life etc
