Semi Official response from Vodafone is that this won't be resolved until Apple deem it an issue and deal with it in a future firmware upgrade!!

Any of you folk that are having this issue tried setting the device to 2G only for a day or soo to see if you still have the same issue....

It seems to be an issue with 3G only - No problems with 2G!

I am having the same issue. Also occurs with calls - i press dial/call and it just says "calling" but there is no ringtone, no connection, no nothing. The same occurs when people try to call me.

Also similar issues with data - just suddenly won't connect.

I'm experiencing problems with SMS, missed calls and not data connection even though 4 bars of signal strength and 3G showing on my 3GS. It has been happening for a while but has become worse in the last week especially.

I have also posted a question about the Vodafone network in the Vodafone forum to see if any non iPhone users have similar problems...

Exactly same problem, iPhone 4 running 4.1 lasts 1 to 2 minutes then OK. Text hang as well during this time. 3 to 4 bars signal strength showing on phone. Napier area. Happens every couple of days, but I am  a light user so may be worse than it appears.

It seems to be an issue with 3G only - No problems with 2G!

For what it's worth... I had similar issues with a Nokia last year.  I deduced the issue was handset switching between 2g and 3g services AND serving cells (I was in a fringe location).  Therefore I locked the device to 2g when in places where I knew the device was constantly switching between sites and services simultaneously....

Solved the prob for me then... At the time I didn't see it as a network or handset issue but as a location (marginal coverage) one, although how the handset firmware determines when to transact the 2g/3g service and cell handovers was the core issue.

I've seen many handsets having problems switching from 2G to 3G and vice-versa. A friend of mine on AT&T has an LG and when she complained about the device reseting itself every few minutes, I asked her what 3G coverage she had in her town (Texas). Not surprising it was minimum, and once locked into 2G it never happened again. LG took her handset away for testing and agreed it was a ROM problem (it was a Windows Mobile device).

My point is that this is a mix of factors - crappy handset firmware that can't recover from these kind of events, and operators that provide multiple network standards.

Regardless, I am with Vodafone on this - Apple should fix it. Now, the problem is how to make Apple recognise there is a problem? Obviously there must be an huge outcry for that to happen, or Vodafone needs to side with customers and let Apple know bad things are happening...

It would be nice to think that Vodafone might go to bat with Apple on their customers behalf but I won't be holding my breath...

I don't think VF and Apple are talking at all after the launch debacle. Even when they were talking, was either listening with the customer upmost in mind?

FWIW, I had a couple txt's last week that were very very slow to send, like 3-4 minutes, but that was out in the Tauranga wilderness. Otherwise, being based in Wgtn I've had no issues.

After I was told it was an Apple Issue and they had been informed by Vodafone of the network switching issues another staff member has come on board and is having a look at it thankfully, many thanks to them.


It would be interesting to know what Firmware people are having the issues on. For myself, 4.01 / 4.02 and 4.1. I don't think I had the issue with 4.0 and no issues with 3.x.

On the Vodafone forums a staff member is asking members to PM them their exact experiences (the time of occurrence, location etc.). Hopefully something comes out of this.

Hi Guys,

Whilst I wont enter into any discussion about what happens next in relation to the escalation of this issue, I did take some names/locations/times etc and we (VFNZ) have been to many locations trying to replicate the fault.

We have managed to replicate the fault and capture the necessary logs to provide back to the vendor. We are currently waiting on a response tto see what the next step is.
