Topic # 92465 30-Oct-2011 09:43 Send private message

I just got a new iPod touch 4G, great device and very happy with it.

However....

I can't activate and therefore use either iMessage or Facetime: I enter my Apple ID (which works fine with iTunes and the App store) I get the message "Could not sign in. Please check your network connection and try again."

My WiFi network is fine, all other devices attached to it (including the iPod for other apps like Safari or Mail) work seemlessly so no problem there.

I have read on other forums that I need to use a different WiFi other than my own to activate these Apps, I don't have easy access at the moment to another WiFi network, and why should this be the case anyway? Seems stupid.

Another suggested solution is to create a new sepate Apple ID to activate these Apps, I don't want to do this on pronciple, it is a hassle and a runaround that I should not have to do.

I have tried rebooting the iPod and the Modem/Router, no help.

I am not alone in this problem and it seems like it is something Apple should have addressed but have not. A bit dispointing for a device that is suppose to "Just work" and otherwise does. In all other resects it is a great, easy to use and I am very impresed with it.

Any comments welcome

Did it come with ios5 already installed, and if not did facetime work in ios4? Can you do a wireless sync? Pretty sure apple give 90 days free telephone support on new devices too so you could try that.

Check your email associated with your appleID. They send you a verification email, maybe it's in your spam folder. You have to follow a link in the email to verify your address to enable FaceTime and iMessage for an email address.

Yes iOS5 was pre installed so never got to try with iOS4, yes wireless sync wirks fine.

Yes I did recieve the confirmation email and was able to confirm succesfully.

I have been able to resolve this issue now, the other forum I read about using another WiFi nework was correct, I found another WiFi network and was able to activate them. I have no idea why this should be, as far as I know my WiFi is working fine. Now that they are activated they work fine through my home WiFi as well!!! Explain that one.

So issue resolved but still think that it is not good that I had to do that.
