FireEngine:
jackzzz: ORCON~~~~! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

Being attacked by the look of it. The guys have worked hard to mitigate the effects, not entirely successful by your comments here (everyone's), but better than we have before. Of course the attacks change but at the end of the day we can't hide the DNS servers from the internet and these latest attacks spoof customer ip addresses....its an arms race for sure.

Thanks for your answer FireEngine. I am not using orcon's DNS server. So I think it's nothing to do with the DNS attack. Great work! Orcon guys. Thank you~~~

I fix stuff!

HI Guys

Looks like it was a DDoS attack against a customer connected to our Northcote datacenter BNG. This overloaded the interfaces, which resulted in your packet loss.

Sorry about the inconvenience

related? no idea if their threat holds any weight. i'd be wary of brief attacks that are likely to be tests for something bigger

I havent noticed any latency issues, but I'm not doing anything latency sensitive...

Are you sure the DNS are 100% tho?

I ask because iTunes update in the app store was giving me DNS errors. Orcon support suggested it was the high demand on apples servers, which I could understand, but being patient/try later/rinse/repeat solved nothing, BUT changing to 8.8.8.8 made it work 1st pop.

You have no data usage since 7/10 at approx 10pm, I'll get one of the team to call you. As you are on Genius your voip service is down so I don't understand your comment about phone number???

Looks like the team have diagnosed your router didn't pickup your details correctly, all is now setup to be corrected once you can factory reset the unit it should now pull down the correct details and you should be good to go. Apologies for the delay.

Just realised I hadn't fully answered - I haven't seen a similar issue like this of the Genius not picking up the correct account details for many months so it does appear to be a frustrating issue but not at all prevalent.

HI Fire Engine And Sound Dude   Sound Dude the old water in the line , line : Is that straight out of the Orcon "101 things to post on a public forum hand book ?

" u have no data usage since 7/10 at approx 10pm

LOL (through the tears)  .

I think that my story needs to be told.

Seriously Orcon should have a chat to the government about violent offending recidivism. Get the reoffenders dealing with some peoples Orcon Issues and Orcons helpdesk and they might think twice about re offending.

My Story in a nut shell.

A/ I have had Slow international internet speeds http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=82&topicid=114232  It's seems that its an ongoing thing with Orcon on and off for a while.

B/ After months of poor international service Fire Engine sends me a "New" Orcon Genius . ( I might add I am grateful not having to go through the helpdesk for this) This is sent to an old address and I manage after a week or so get it back thanks to a phone call from the owner of the property . I think that's Orcon would I expect anything less?

C/ I sit on the router for a few weeks as personally I do not believe it is the issue and Orcon has bigger internal issues and I don't want to waste time configuring it. And god help me if I have to call the help desk.

D/ I decide to take the task on "7/10 at approx 10pm" Dreading the beating and caning and wasted time that I am going to get from calling the Orcon helpdesk and the teething problems which always seem to go with a new install.

E/ HOLY COW . I plug the router in and it says configuring and bang I am online and do a quick speed test 16.7 mb WOW that is blazing for me .

Ha What was I worried about? This was the most painless install that I have done. Thinking how much technology has moved on I sleep easily

I have heard a saying if it seems to good to be true it generally is. Little did I know..

F/ Last night how wrong could I be. Suddenly one of my devices disconnects hmm not cool. I cannot connect it back to the wireless network. So I try a reset on the router and Bang no internet.

G/ So I start to trouble shoot. I check the phone and there is a dial tone. Let me check if it actually works, so I ring my mobile. The mobile rings. HUH that's not my number as it caller IDs some random number with a 03 prefix I am in a 06 area
Whats happened to my number ? So I try to ring my number and no such number.

H/ So I call the help desk, Its outside of hours and I can press a number for urgent land line faults. The guys tells me they are 3rd party and have nothing to do with Orcon. I am not sure of the point of that option?

I/ Welcome to my nightmare I am going to have to call the helpdesk and get asked 1001 irrelevant questions, that have nothing to do with solving my issues. I worked on a helpdesk for my own company for 7 years so I know computers.  Sure enough as expected  I am on hold, all operators busy. Then after 5 minutes the line disconnects.

J/ Here we go again I call back and after a quick 10  minute hold I get through to the call center.

K/ Cringing as I am asked to go through the standard check list, which is pointless in my mind.  The guy wants to me check my computer settings.   Excuse me!  I just had 4 devices fail at the same time the probability if that is so close to ZERO.

After 10 minutes I am staying look My phone number is different,  that points to a bigger underlying issue. Its not my computers wireless. I am told that if the wireless is not working my phone cannot be working. We debate this point for a couple of minutes as I say the phone is working . I am told " it can't happen".

I say look let me ring you from it, whats your number.  Surely that will prove I have a connection. Finally the guy agrees,  So I ring the help desk off the phone that I am told cannot be possibly working.  The guy decides it is working.

25 - 30 minutes into the call and going no where, I am asked to login to the router. There I see somebody else's email address and phone number . So stupidly of me, akin to jamming my hand in a door.  I go to check that it was the same number from the caller ID last night.   And I hang up on the help desk Praying for  a call back that does not come....I start the process again.

L/ After the standard 10 minute hold. I get another guy and try to bring him up to speed about whats going on.  Then he puts me on hold for  few mins for a couple of times and comes back and says we need to do a factory reset so we navigate there and I press reset and wait for the 100 count down. No luck we do it again and wait for the 100 count down.  Nothing is happening.

Then I am put back hold for a couple of Mins. He comes back we need to do a hard reset. So we proceed with pushing the button for a hard reset and wait for the modem to reconfigure. Jessxx  (xx is her email and I presume I have been getting her phone calls) settings are still in the modem and her number . The guy puts me on hold again for a few more minutes and comes back and says we need to escalate this to second level we Orcon will fix it from our end.

Arhhhhhhhhhh I was trying to tell the other guy this 2 hours ago.  I have missed the whole morning at work.

I watch my computer for a bit and on the screen and google.co.nz comes up.  I  pray that the ordeal is over  I do a quick speed test and I am crawling along @ 2 mb

https://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3021265370    The ordeal is not yet over.

M/ I get a call from someone actually  in New Zealand, ( the help desk is offshore some where)    on my mobile asking me to hard reset my modem again . I am now at work 2 hours late.  I ask whats different about this one than the last 3 times I did it.?   Is there a point ?  The guy does not know and  says he will ring me back.

O/ I get a call back and there is some behind the scenes issues they have dealt  with and they are "supposed to be fixed" I now need to hard reset the router.   I will up date once I get home to do this. is the ordeal over? .... To be continued.

I just hope that I am getting the 17mb speeds that Jess has, as my line is clearly capable of it  with her use name and password in the settings.  Which was set to UFBB not ADSL

Lets see what happens as the new speed tests are going to tell an interesting story if they are still sitting at 2 -3  mb.

Thanks Orcon your  errors cost me time and money. No offer of anything,  Its cost me hundreds of $$ of my time dealing with this.

So people this is the joys can look forward to for being an Orcon Customer.
