Is any diagnosis being done on routers that have 'failed' in this manner? Does his router get binned or is it repaired and put back on the shelf for the next poor mug?

Are the 2nd hand ones tested before being sent out again? Is there a log of who had a particular router previously?

Yes to all of the above. An individual Genius device is specifically configured to work only with a certain user at any one time, specified by mac address so full details of the history and movement of each device is available to us.

Yeah I agree. This "refurbished" Router has cost me about 5 hours of my time and the hour or so to the helpdesk was painful.   I am not sure if the last one was "refurbished"  Its pretty poor really that I have to invest so much time.  Surely Orcon  for "Fixed" routers would have some sort of testing system in place to avoid inflicting this sort of pain on their customers. 

The one just received was Brand New I am sure about that.  

Firengine  These were wired tests from the PC.  I have not tested the wireless speed but the signal is good. 

  I can live with these speeds as it seems to be doing what I need. I would still like to try that extra long cord. To get more out of it.    Possible ?

it would be interesting to see if the previous owner of the failed router had similar speed complaints logged on their account. Obviously not asking for this info to be shared.

Short of the possibility that the router died at the customers premises, the testing of the the unit before despatch was clearly not up to par

While the Genius is modeled off the iiNet Bob, they are infact different modems but made by the same company.

We also use the Boblite on some of our plans but apart from being in the same outer case (bar a socket or two), they are substantively different and we have to maintain different stock lines for each.

Yes I will be investigating the testing, notwithstanding that individual unit throughput rate testing isn't likely to feature on any manufacturers pre-shipping test list for consumer-grade units...
