I even tried to hook up my laptop to the ONT and login to the admin terminal to see what was going on, but its refusing connections on the admin IP.

Hold up - are you saying you connected your laptop to the ONT and got a local subnet? What was the "admin IP"?

If you're getting a local (RFC1819) address from your ONT, something is wrong.

Hey! Huawei HG8240H5's have an internal admin IP address printed on their backside. I plugged my laptop directly to the 10G port and didnt check if I got a local subnet or anything - I just got a network stuck on "Unidentified" and proceeded to try ping and load up the admin IP located on the label.

Was based off what I stumbled on here in regards to tinkering around inside this specific ONT series: https://github.com/Anime4000/Hacking_Huawei_HG8240H5_ONT

Was more of a "stuff it lets try and see", It didn't respond - so I just unplugged it and went about other troubleshooting.

This is what I get plugged directly into the ONT 10G port:

Again, cant login to the admin web ui though - wont load on http or https on port 80.

Yeah cool, that's good - you shouldn't be able to. Was just a sanity check to make sure your ONT was actually configured correctly.

Yep seems like it!

I have contacted the fibre provider (Tuatahi First Fibre) to check the ONT is reporting all happy.

I have contacted 2Deg and still no response from their L2 techs, which I was told would email me within 24h.

I have contacted TP-Link who also took me through all basic troubleshooting steps + mac cloning the Orbi router and using custom VLAN10, P0 and IPTV Tag 4 and Priority 2.

TP-Link is pushing it up the chain to senior techs, and I have provided them a bunch of data.

I'm super stumped, it literally just seems like the ONT refuses to assign an IP to the Deco.

Just another sanity check, given you're using a TFF Hyperfibre ONT (I'm assuming a HN8250Ts)?

These ONTs only allow port negotiation at 1G or 10G, so if your router is trying to negotiate at 2.5G for example, it won't work.

It's this ONT here: EchoLife HG8240H5.

The ONT doesnt look like what you find online though, I think its a brand new model? Looks like this, not the squared off one I see all over the net:

Correction, the box it came in is wrong.

It is a HN8250Ts.

I guess that is case closed? I need a 10gbps supported router for this ONT, as it wont negotiate on 2.5gbps that the router is trying to negotiate at?

Thank you for listing this, It wasn't until I triple checked the ONT and you raised this as an issue that I checked. (I had no idea they only negotiated at 1G or 10G.. Lesson learnt.)

If that photo is of your own box, you should probably hide the serial number (I have no clue of what people can do with s/n's tbh lol)

Confirmed model: HN8250Ts on the ONT diagnostics

https://www.ycict.com/echolife-hg8321-4.html

another OLT/ONT site has the Huawei HN8250Ts 10 GE: Auto-adaptive 100 Mbit/s,1000 Mbit/s or 10000 Mbit/s

Might still not support 2.5G.

begs the question, why doesn't it auto neg to 1Gig and obtain an IP then?

Hello Mr 2Degrees man! I'm just going to return the Deco and maybe look at other options like a Microtik router instead.

Do you have any suggestions that you know/suggest might work with this config?

Thanks!

To be honest, I wonder what the Huawei ONT is doing when it sees this... perhaps a question for TFF.

Unfortunately with the Decos you can't force 1gbps negotiation (this also applies on the X80 which yes is a 5G FWA CPE but it does have 2.5gbpe LAN/WAN).

@cxf

Am I able to request a different ONT to be installed through TTF or 2Deg - The other option is the Nokia Hyperfibre from Chorus, which supports auto-sensing for 1gbps/2.5gbps/5gbps/10gbps?

That would solve my issues, because I realistically only need 2.5gb dual eth ports on a router - and if the Nokia ONT is supplied I can use what I have here.

I must say, considering 2Deg offers only 2.5G and 4G hyperfibre plans - It seems odd to have an ONT that only supports 1G or 10G auto-sensing over Wan.

I still have a fault investigation under ID#42561877, if you need my contact info for anything.

Thanks!
