I applied for the unlimited plan on Wednesday and it was activated today (Friday)

It runs really well. I see no difference from unlimited and the old telecom 100gb plan I was on. Connects at around 20mb line.

Downloading from FTP server at top speed of 2.2MB/s sustained.
Pleased :)

Why does the broadband 250 plan cost more then the unlimited?  Does traffic on the 250 plan get higher priority?  I can only assume that since the unlimited it cheaper that they expect the average person on unlimited to use less then 250 data.

Like many others I am trying to convince everyone else in the household to give slingshot another chance.

Broadband 250 has a different international line then the Unlimited plans, the rest of the reasons are commercially sensitive and I can not discuss.

I was on the old Unlimited plan (AYCE) and was using less then 200gb per month so I upgraded to the 250gb plan, I have noticed no change it speed what so ever.

Speeds vary a lot on this plan, I guess it depends on the time of day.  I sometimes get close to 18Mb/s and at this time getting less than 5Mb/s. Can others also share their Speedtest results.  Sync speeds on the modem are really good though.

My Orcon for comparison:

I'm still trying to decide between Telecom and Slingshot AYCE... I'm thinking that the fluctuating performance of the latter might not be such a problem as my line seems to be so poor anyway?

I've just signed up for the unlimited plan.  We've been on Telecom's broadband since they brought out that 128k plan back in 2001 I think it was.  The no contract part was what sold it to the other people in the household.  Can't hurt to give it a try.
Here are my current speed son Telecom for comparison, 7pm on Sunday:

Is there a GB downloaded meter besides the one on the slingshot site?

Just out of interest to see how much I've downloaded.

If you go into Visibill and select the correct billing period you can view your data usage for the month.

can you at least state that they are not contradictory to the statement "no strings"?

it sounds like 'strings' may actually only refer to contract terms, not, say, a series of tripwires put in place with the goal of decreasing performance. (though, as someone from Slingshot has commented, someone managed to download over a TB in a month on the plan, so it must be pretty decent).

you could always look at your network status in the tray (for sent/received bytes), that at least tells you what you've been up to while the connection was up (and if, like a lot of people, you never shut down your PC, you would get a pretty good idea of your usage without needing to take note of it every single day.

Detruire - Give this a try:http://www.slingshot.co.nz/MyAccount/API/?username=USERNAME&pwd=PASSWORD

Replace USERNAME and PASSWORD. Its still not 100% realtime, but may be helpful.
