snafoo: 700ms ....

Posts like this are not helpful.

700ms to where?

timbuktu?

Well, I said performance on WoW is horrible, then, in my next post I said 700ms, so, using logic, one would assume I'd be talking about WoW.

the last post I see from you says:

snafoo: please change it back :( lagging and spiking!

I see no mention of WoW unless it was on previous pages.

Anyways.

corksta: Still on Orcon, but the main line downstairs has been changed back over to Telecom from TelstraClear. On the Broadband Pro (as part of TotalHome) they are consistently getting 10.2Mb/s to Auckland, ~9Mb/s to Sydney, ~8Mb/s to LA, and pings in the 20s, 40s, and about 110 respectively regardless of the time of day or night. YouTube, downloads, etc, are all perfect - Internet how it should be.

Still waiting for the technician to come to the house to change our line and merge it with the main one, but looking forward to getting those speeds on our computer, at which point it will be 'so long Orcon'.

The speeds may be good, but at $20.40/GB when you go over the 40GB allowance, it's insanely expensive.

I guess we have to stick with the big broadband providers since they are the ones with the good supply lines.

I'm still considering the switch to Telstra, but some people have been complaining recently, so I'm unsure.

Yes that is true but I don't think more than 30GB has ever been used in a month in this house, so while we will be conscious of that I don't see it being an issue. For us it's about the speed and the consistency, our habits won't change.

Down Stream

you are "pretty sure" you're on the + network?

how sure are you? because if im not mistaken', you're stats show a perfect ADSL1 profile :P. Unless of course your +network connection actually really does suck.

Im on orcon+ and my sync rate is half of his lol..

You can say that again.

If Telecom came out with a 80GB ADSL2+, I'm so there.

Every ISP has their complaints.. Telecom, Orcon, Slingshot. The lot.

You'll never get a perfect connection unfortunately, I guess its just trial and error..

if it helps, when I was with Telstra, I had fantastic internet all of the time.

Yeah, I've been a customer of theirs on a business ADSL connection and it was rock-solid. Not uber fast, but very, very reliable. None of this variable speeds at different times of day.

I'm almost at 60GB used for this month (remote backups and the likes) on a 30GB plan with Orcon. I know it's gonna cost me, but at least I can manage $2/GB. That's one of the reasons I'm considering a switch to Telstra. Their data packs would suit me perfectly.

Seeing a nice latency jump to the WoW servers

As for the HON ingame issue, I think I have found the problem

Our layer7 switch didn't detect it was a game and threw it into the "When I get around to it" queue. So the latency would have been spiking around lots.

I have done some changes and will monitor it tonight.

Can't say I don't give you geekzoners good service :P Try and get that from Telecom :P

Love your work... now if only Orcon offered a unlimited plan with voip > gaming > email > ftp/youtube/http download > p2p ...prioritisation

That asianetcom >> AT&T link is always having intermittant problems, most geeks playing wow bypass it with a ssh tunnel to wowtunnels or smoothping etc.

The irony is that we don't need that sort of service from Telecom, because congestion isn't an issue (unless you're on Big Time perhaps) on their service.  It's also a shame that people seem to get better service through you via a forum than they do by going through Orcon support.  Around April of 2008 I was having congestion issues on Orcon with another S2 Games game (Savage 2), probably due to incorrect prioritisation, and provided a traceroute along with other technical details, but all I got in response was generic tier 1 support.

I'm curious as to how game traffic is identified.  Surely there must be other games whose network traffic isn't being categorised correctly.

I hate dealing with AT&T :(

Might throw in an AS filter and route the outbound via another one of our carriers.
