moxpearl: ZERO reason to stay now...

Currently Orcon = $110 for 60GB
New Telecom = $105 for 120GB

I read somewhere that the new Telecom plan isn't available until May. It'd pay to double-check with Telecom.

Yep, you can sign up now, but they dont kick in until the end of this month :)

Guess it gives the other ISPS a fortnight or so to pump out some new plans

I rang Orcon just to cancel my account as I'm moving to a new rental next week and have already signed up to better plan with Telecom. Took me all of 2 minutes, gave them my account number, said I wanted to cancel and she said yep thats fine, last day is 30 days from today as I'm on no contract, and they would pro-rata the unused amount and credit me on my next bill cycle.

Happy if it goes that smoothly.

Surprised though they didn't even try to woo me into staying, even though I wouldn't have but surprised none the less.

Just to point out.


120gigs for $105 with Telecom is not available until May as per mentioned on their website.

Secondly Orcon are releasing new pricing/data plans as of next week, obviously to accommodate the changes in the market. I anticipate a doubling of data available on the current plans (so in my case 30 gigs will most likely become 60gigs for the $70 p/w i pay).

Tbh i think it would be wise to wait to see the new pricing plans before changing otherwise you may just straight up shaft yourself with a Contract Break Fee only to find you're getting the same deal with Telecom.

Totally see your point.  If they double the plan it would have put me at 100Gb so still less.  I was on no contract so no fee apart from half a months charges as I couldn't cancel with the full 30 days, but I should be getting a free tivo saving me $299 anyway.

I was actually toying with leaving Orcon anyway as I've had a fair few problems with there usage reporting.  A few times now, the worst being when I went away for a week (turned the modem off) and when I came back I had 7gb used!?!?  I tried arguing but they were having none of it.  Then in the past when they unmetered TVNZ we always got charged for it and they said its because we were watching it wrong, despite using the TVNZ on demand link.  That put us over our allowance at the time.

And the last thing is we keept having lots of disconnects.  I've used 3 modems now so I know its not the hardware, but Orcon support say there is nothing wrong with the line.  Bit annoying as sometimes it can drop 4-5 times a day.

Anyway.

I must say, from my experience, most of the issues Customers experience are not the fault of the ISP and often it seems a common misconception that changing provider will rectify issues. (of course bad Customer Service and Pricing are the exceptions).......With regards to Downloads/uploads, Pings, Drop outs, misplaced bandwidth and data etc more often than not these issues occur on the Customers end due to Customers Hardware, Line quality and distance from exchange........

I had an issues a few months ago, i was getting these massive bills for excessive usage, i was bleeding out atleast several gigs a day, even when i wasn't actively using the internet. I phoned my ISP, harrassed them, I was sure it wasn't me responsible for the amounts of Data being burnt through as it was happening when i wasn't doing jack on the net. After alot of stress and rage it turned out to be the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service. I'd been streaming wirelessly through my Playstation 3 usng my PC as a Media Centre and for some reason the WMP service had been whoring up my bandwidth. I now keep it disabled when im not streaming. And i stopped blaming the isp.

You have to phone them and ask them about it. It still applied as of last week.

please buy this lad a good beer. this is why ISPs ask customer's to troubleshoot to make sure its not your own CPE issue before ISPs can apply fix.
