alasta: I would love for TV3 to make an iPad app available, but only if the quality is decent. I often stream from the 3News app to my Apple TV and it's great for convenience but the resolution is a bit too low for a typical modern TV.

Yeah the PS3 TVNZ on demand app lost the option for high/low quality a while back and is pretty raw now.

+1 for Sony TV's. Sony seem to be actively adding online content, I like the Ziln channel they have, especially since my ISP (TelstraClear) offer Ziln.co.nz as part of their zero-rated package.

Yes the sonys system works quite well. But I think it is interesting how some manufacturers seem to be getting favoured over others. So if you buy a samsung you may get tvnz ondemand content, but if you buy another brand, you may get eg. media works content. I think there needs to be some regulation and openness on this for consumer benefit. Youtube for example seems to be on most devices these days.

I imagine it's basically up to the device manufacturers to facilitate it once the broadcasters choose to promote the medium.

You wouldn't really want your TVs not to have TVNZ on demand once a major brand like Samsung has it.

I would have thought it was more to do with exclusive arrangements between the manufacturer and the TV channels

Actually - pretty cool if they do go down the android app path.
I have a Samsung smart TV - so that should be good to go when TVNZ release it - but I see a lot of those cheap android/USB/HDMI dongles run android and they would be a good way of making a non smart tv 'smart'.

I have a non smart TV as well - so considering how to give it some smarts at the moment.

I see PBtech seem to be the first 'shop' to sell such a device locally:

Anyone tried one?
I thought it was a little pricey but this unit has a remote control and remote control sensor as well as a PSU - so probably not bad at $160ish.

TVNZ Partners with Brightcove for New onDemand Catch-up TV App

Brightcove (NASDAQ: BCOV), a leading global provider of cloud content services, today announced that TVNZ, New Zealand’s national broadcaster, will launch a new TVNZ onDemand catch-up TV app for Apple iOS and Google Android devices using the Brightcove App Cloud mobile app platform. There's a need for cheap devices to handle the quite specific web content formats of on demand services. Especially for quality interfaces, so you're not having to do too much to make it work etc. App based approaches are definitely preferred as they 'take over' the device, so you don't have to run them as web pages in some fiddly browser etc.

I see the TVNZ ondemand app is available on the samsung app store for samsung smart TVs.
Seems to work ok when I installed it last night.

I wonder if the android version is far away - It seems like they are letting Samsung get the jump on the app for now.

What generation is your smart tv?

Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat APAC as a Technology Evangelist and Portfolio Architect. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.

Not sure of the exact model to be honest - Bought it mid year and it was a new model then.
Has the whole SmartTV menu that the new samsung TVs have. So it has its own Samsung Application suite that is like the android google play store.

TVNZ Ondemand app appeared on my ES8000 , played back pre show adverts fine. But stopped with error message. I need to upgrade firmware as i'm currently on v1016,. I just bought this set and not keen on doing a firmware update, until I read up on what the changes are.

I'm still calibrating it and studying the forums.

The issue is that now they are more than a 'simple' tv - they have lots of software - you will potentially gets lots of software updates.
