Actually more serious than that. The on-screen display has become unstable slipping sideways and when I play back a recording the video is fast forwarding even though the playback time is progressing at a normal rate...
Just hoping to be able to watch my previously recorded content now... will try RCA cables next

Sounds fairly terminal.

However, I did note that just before I replaced my harddrive, the video occasionally fastforwarded (from a recording) with no sound.  A power on reset would fix it for a while but only for a couple of days.  It hasn't happened since I replaced the drive.  Bit of a long-shot, but of course you'll lose your recordings... Otherwise worth a go if you have a spare drive lying around?

Thanks, yes similar symptoms. I have a spare Pana XW390 so have switched to that. Hope I get as long a run from it as I did my Magic TV.

My MTV3600 has consumed 1 HMDI cable, 3 remotes (2 Magic and 1 Harmony), 1 power brick (replaced with another I had around), 1 HDD (replaced with new 2G Seagate) and 1 main board (replaced with one from a 2nd hand MTV3600).  Two new heads, four new handles, but still grandpa's axe!

Thank you TwoLostKiwis!

I've been running 1 minute forward, 8 seconds back since Ian made that available.  I configure a shutdown at 2:00am and use an external timer to power cycle at 3:00am.  I'm keen to see how Simon's hack works.

I use the Ethernet port to transfer programs off the HDD but the procedure to do that reliably is quite a pain and it sometimes seems to copy off in real time.  It could really do to support DLNA or similar.

I'd love to find something else that works as well and supports some of the new Freeview features (any recommendations?).  I've got a couple of HDHR tuners and Plex but the programming interface is pretty slow and awkward.

Not liking the Panasonic so much, might be keen to get the Magic fixed if possible.
3 different things can happen, ordered from orst to best
1. I turn it on and the image (menus) is unstable and torn, then it degrades to completely unreadable, just lines
2. I turn it on and play a recording but it shows a black screen and won't progress
3. I turn it on and play a recording. I have a picture running at 1.5x and no audio
Note the original remote broke long ago, have been using a harmony
What might be my next step - just open it up and put an old drive in? I've got a 1TB WD caviar green

Have you tried running the rescue procedure and loading the firmware again.
I have managed to get a couple of the 3600 going again doing this.
I have read that you have to load an original firmware not a modified version from 2lostkiwis when doing the rescue procedure.
Also load a different version from the final one you want to run. (Load 3.16 or something like that with the recovery procedure, then upgrade to the modified version you want after that. )

Worth a try as it's not working now so really you can't make it any worse.
It will only take about 15 minutes to do.

Hi. Yes not much to lose.
If the rescue wipes the hdd I'd rather try a different one first. I have the manual somewhere, don't have original firmware though. Will look around the house for another psu too

I'm not sure if the rescue procedure wipes the hard drive or not. From memory it does not wipe existing recordings.
You can download original firmware from the mymagictv.co.nz website. There are two versions there.
Will be interested to hear how you get on.

After some more thought I don't think there is much point in changing the hard drive at this stage.
I have two of the 3600s and I swapped the main board between them to isolate a problem. Once they were booted up I expected to see the settings stay with the main board and be swapped as well. I was surprised to find that was not the case so must be stored on the hard drive.
So if you swap the hard drive and it gets it going you will still need to put the old hard drive back to view the old recorded programs. As soon as it starts up it will load the firmware from the old hard drive and you will have the old problem back again.
So to be able to watch the recorded programs on the hard drive you will have to reload the firmware. That maybe all that is required rather than the recovery procedure.
In the three instances I have run the recovery procedure the 3600 would not start up so I had no option.

Just a thought... have you tried using the analogue interface or swapping with a known good HDMI cable?  I thought the HDMI driver in mine had packed up right up until I replaced the main board and the HDMI fault persisted.  Turns out I had 2 faulty HDMI cables that both sort-of worked with my PC and monitor.

Good thinking. Tried that was HDMI now RCA. It's also disconnected from the aerial cables now just in case they were interfering.

Hmm 3.20 or 3.21 - I remember them introducing a bug for some users... will I be able to downgrade to my preferred version? 3.13b ?

Yes. You can downgrade or upgrade but you cant reload the same version.
So if you load 3.20 then you can't load 3.20 that has been modified by 2 lost kiwis as it thinks it's already loaded.
So if you load 3.20 you will be able load 3.13b no problem.

Firmware upgrade successful
Problem unchanged
Should I try a different HDD next?

Yes, may as well. You don't have many other options.
