We subscribed to VDSL a few weeks ago and up until Tuesday things had been going great, 23 Mbps down, about 9 Mbps up. The chorus tech said we were~650m from the cabinet.

On Tuesday the connection randomly started disconnecting and reconnecting at erratic speeds (anywhere from 1mbps to 24). I rang snap and had a fault logged with Chorus who watched our line. Snap got back to me this afternoon and reported that Chorus ha determined we were 1.29km from the exchange, this outside the range of VDSL. The snap rep said our only option was to return to Adsl.

My problem is though if we are indeed outside the range, wouldn't the connection have started deopping well before it this week. Over the past few weeks everything has been performing well, and indeed, the chorus tech who installed it was a bit surprised we were only getting 23mbps.

The other thing that annoys me is the disparity in distances from Chorus. The technician said we were 650 metres from the cabinet, but seemingly chorus have told snap we're 1.29km from the exchange.

Both distances I suspect are correct. I asked the Snap guy why we couldn't just be connected to the cabinet at the end of our street rather than the exchange, but he insisted it wasn't possible.

Surely if we'd been too far away from the beginning it would have started playing up well before this?

23Mbps is pretty low. I get 38Mbps at 900m.

What's your internal wiring like? The chorus tech should have installed a master splitter as close as possible to the demarc and then a dedicated cable/pair to a dedicated VDSL jack.

The chorus techs said they installed a splitter, no idea where they installed it but they told me they were required to install one, even though it wasn't necessary for naked broadband.

Phoned Snap again this morning and decided to bite the bullet and get Chorus out. Apparently if there's no fault or its an internal wiring issue it could cost over $200.

It all depends how the area was reticulated. It is not a simple thing to move an entire RLG to a cabinet rather than exchange. Chorus have shot themselves in the foot provisioning this line in the first place but now that they have I would suggest they have a responsibility to maintain it.

I was under the impression from the Chorus techs who did the install that we were connected to the cabinet, but I guess I'll find out tomorrow.

A Chorus tech came around yesterday and fiddled with something behind the jack point, seemingly fixing the line. Not sure exactly what he did though.

Ok turns out I just looked at the line stats at a good time. The router log shows its been disconnecting during the day, less frequently than previously but its still happening.

Rang Snap, they said apparently the guy fixed some loose wiring on the jack point, but as the problems are still happening another Chorus tech is going to come out and a have a look.
