I have been a 2degrees customer for three and a half years and have used voicemail numerous times over that period. Yesterday I called voicemail to pick up a message and received an automated prompt telling me that I haven't used voicemail before and I should therefore set up a personal greeting.

I don't know how 2degrees have managed to lose my voicemail greeting, but you might want to check your own greeting in case the problem is widespread.

I just rung my 2degrees mobile from my home phone and voicemail with my greeting answered my call.

That's a bit unusual. Were you calling from your 2degrees mobile? (I'm going to assume you've used it more recently than 60 days ago).

Yes, I was calling from my 2degrees phone. I have used the phone constantly over the last 60 days, although it's possible that I haven't accessed voicemail in the last 60 days. Could that cause the problem?

I got a new phone for Christmas and when I changed the sim over I had to record a new voice mail greeting. Then had to re do it again about a week later. has been fine now for a while

Hi Alasta

Yes, that would be the reason. If you haven't accessed your Voicemail in 60 days it becomes deactivated due to inactivity, i.e. no calls left or retrieved.

Yes, that would be the reason. If you haven't accessed your Voicemail in 60 days it becomes deactivated due to inactivity, i.e. no calls left or retrieved.

Really? That seems... a bit ridiculous?

So my account could be fully active with outgoing/incoming calls/sms/data but If no one has left a VM and I haven't accessed my VM box in the last 60 days, I loose my greeting?

I'm sure I've had periods of 60 day inactivity before. That would be crazy!

I agree - this is quite a revelation. I don't often use voicemail, but I need to know that people will always be greeted appropriately on those odd occassions when I get calls that I can't answer.

I could understand on a prepaid account which has had no account activity at all but for an account that is in use?

What does 2Degrees achieve by culling VM greetings after the 60 day period? Besides irritating customers.

hmm ok ... didn't know this myself, but might have had it happen to me mid last year. Assumed I had broken something.....

So if I have a message asking callers to sent me a txt message and for some amazing reason that's what they do for 60 days, I loose the message telling them to not leave a message ... nice ...

Can we offer cake to get this period extended ?

Most likely. Assume we are safe if they caller hits your greeting but hangs up before the record your message tone?

^POB: inactivity, i.e. no calls left or retrieved.

would seem a caller just being presented with the message is not enough ...

So does this imply that if VM has not been used in 60 days, then after that no message can be left by a caller, or are they just not hearing a greeting, but can still leave a message?

We reuse mailbox licenses when an old mailbox is deleted. 60 days - 2 months - is a reasonable compromise between having unused mailboxes hanging around forever, and not annoying too many customers who just go on holiday for a couple of weeks. Any access - retrieval or deposit - resets the clock, so you've got to not receive or check for a single message in 2 months before it gets automatically deleted. That's pretty unlikely if you use your phone all the time, but I suppose it will, rarely, happen.
