robertosc: Hello

I switched to VDSL today but I'm experiencing slow connection: 18Mbps DL / 7Mbps UL.

I have a Draytek Vigor 130 and I'm plugged directly to it.

I've read this post http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?topicid=105744  but I confess I didn't understand much. I live in an apartment so I don't know the distance to the cabinet or any details on the wiring. The plug in my apartment is a RJ45 and I'm using two adapters (one RJ45 to the british telephone jack and another from the british jack to RJ11), so this is the only source of attenuation I have access to.

Basically I want to know 2 things:

1 - Which are the variables I should verify to detect the source of my problem and what values I should expect them to be? Is it the SRN? Mine is 12, what it should be?

2 - Are there any settings in the router/modem that I could change to make a difference or is this purely a physical connection problem?

Thank you!

Did a chorus guy come and install a master filter?  Not sure why you are running so many adaptors. Doesn't the modem come with the right cable?

chevrolux: Just plug the RJ11 straight in to the RJ45. They still fit. Probably won't make of a difference but you never know.

No, never do that.  The RJ11 plug damages the RJ45 socket.

Just buy the RJ11 - RJ45 cable, I think the last one cost me $2.

If the RJ45 socket is dedicated only for the VDSL socket, and is not part of wider structured cabling, then I wouldn't be too fussed about plugging RJ11 in here. If in doubt, then leave it out.

Chorus has spent $1.4 billion on making their xDSL broadband network faster and even more now as they are upgrading their rural Conklins. If your still stuck on ADSL or VDSL, why not spend $195 on a master filter install to make sure you are getting the most out of your connection?

Changed to a proper cable, here's what I got:

It got worse!

Anyway, I didn't perceive meaningful change in the speed (19Mbps/9Mbps).

@NonprayingMantis - chorus guy didn't come, I was at work and received a call from them/Snap saying that they've switched to VDSL so I should reconfigure my modem. I'm using my own modem and cables.

I moved recently to NZ, I'm not sure how this was supposed to be, whether the guy should come to my home and measure line attenuation, put filters and stuff or not, but they didn't come when I got ADSL and didn't come when I switched to VDSL.
