I have a SIM which receives 200MB of data each month as part of a promotion 2Degrees offered early last year. I use this on a Wi-Fi hotpot. When that 200MB is exhausted, the hotspot then starts using shared data from my plan.
I think I have experienced that when the 200MB runs out, I have to reboot the device before it then starts to use my shared data.
As I soon will be streaming my wedding and don't want the stream to be interrupted, can someone please confirm that that's the case, that if data belonging to the SIM runs out, I then must reboot the device before shared data will be available to it?

It's supposed to be seamless, but I had similar experience the first time my tablet SIM ran out of data.

Like you I had to reboot, but haven't had to ever again when using data sharing from my phone SIM.

I asked 2Degrees via Twitter, but both responses I got we vaguely half-arsed with their response.

You only have to end the data session; a reboot is not required. But no, it isn't seamless. Each account in the system has a Primary Wallet. This is where the stuff in your account is stored. When you do data sharing, we literally take the other person's Primary Wallet and make it your Secondary Wallet (and potentially, the Secondary Wallet of several other people too).

The system can seamlessly move from one balance type (e.g. Zone data, National pack data, plan data, cash) to another within a wallet in one single session, but it can only choose a wallet at the beginning of a session. So you'll use up all the data in your wallet first, and then further usage will be blocked until you restart data.

As I said, a reboot isn't required: flight mode and back will do it, and if you have 3G, turning data off and on again will work too (that doesn't always work for LTE, because there is only data in LTE).
