Been trying to track my wife's phone (Xperia Z) using google+ locations, but it sometimes does not update her location for hours; just this evening it was telling me she was at work 10 hours ago.  Sometimes it's up to the minute, but 10 hours ago is useless.

(The tracking is needed for a health issue.  Recently, she was out at night, lost, incapacitated, unable to use her phone.)

Can anyone recommend an app that does the job?

Android Device Manager - you get location on request, you must be logged in with her account though.

You can also on her device go to Settings | Security | Device Administrators and add ADM as an administrator. This will allow you to send remote commands to lock, unlock and reset the device.

If you don't know her Google Account, another option is Prey (similar to previous suggestions).

Cerberus is the most widely used tool I think. You can install it as a system app if they phone is rooted, so it survives the device being wiped or reset.

Another one to add into the mix is OwnTracks. You will need your own MQTT broker which the phone publishes location updates too, but I have been using this on mine, and my wifes phone (Android and iOS resp.) for the last 6 months and it is pretty good. The con is you have to run your own MQTT broker (not difficult to setup if you already have a 24/7 server), the pro is your location data is your own - i.e. there are no 3rd party servers storing your position.

May not be what you are after in this case, but might be worth a look. You can monitor other users in the OwnTracks app and set 'regions' or 'waypoints' which cause a special 'enter/leave' message to be sent when they phone moves in/out of that region.
