Still in love with my Mate 8 (changed from the Note at start of the year). Awesome phone and I only need to charge it every 2 to 3 days. Best purchase I made this year and I paid double what you can get it for now and I would again.

Must say I'm tempted by the new really low clearance price of the Mate 8 at NL's, given it's well under half of what a Mate 9 (on sale) would cost: I'm assuming it'll be at least $1k during a decent sale, whereas the Mate 8's on run-out for $439.

The thing that's holding me back is the camera; for those who own/have used Mate 8s (@Quinny, @NikT; @xlinknz), can you report how you have found the camera in real life? Reviews are very critical of the HDR mode in particular. Has Huawei provided updated software/firmware to improve the camera? Is it going to be better than the camera on my current phone (LG G3)? I don't love the camera on the G3, so was keen on ensuring my new phone had a better one; if it's better than the G3 but not up there with the best then I'm ok with that, given that difference is not worth the $500+ savings compared to a Mate 9.

Thanks for any advice!

Wow imho $439 is bargain of the year to date in regards to phones - check it has 3GB but I'm fairly sure they never shipped with 2GB

In regards to the camera I haven't used it yet and rarely take photos. I do recall a review being critical of the camera but not being a big camera user that didn't worry me and like you I assume [not expect] a software/firmware update will fix that. If you find out what s/w update [build# or kernal ver etc] fixes the camera I can check mine for you

I'm very pleased except EMUI doesn't have multi user so may yet root

jonathan18: How does this (std Mate 8, not the Porsche ed) compare to the P series in terms of performance, quality etc? I see what the Mate 8 is selling for already, which is damn cheap, so am not sure where the Mates are designed to sit in relation to the P series.

I like the feel of the P8+ in the hand, but would be happy with a larger screen. The Mate 9 seems to be about the same size as the 6P I've also been looking at, but with a larger screen so less bezel (prefer the feel of the P9+ to the 6P).

I see the screen is IPS, whereas the P9+is AMOLED - should that be of any concern?

Also, any inkling what the Mate 9 may sell for in NZ?

Thanks in advance for any answers!

I recently got a Mate 8 for $499 smile

I saw a few reviews on-line comparing the Mate 8 & Mate 9 but imho there didn't seem to be much in it and the Mate 9 will be a lot more than $499 !

I use BT headphones, the only time I use the headphone jack is for ear buds when I want to listen to FM Radio but obviously cheap ear buds isn't the best way to test the headphone jack...

I was very pleased with my Mate 8 [my first phone over 4"], my only issue is EMUI I should have realised it doesn't have multi-user so I may have to root it yet...

Where did you get it at that price mate?

Ended up pushing the button on the Mate 8 - decided that a better camera wasn't worth an additional $500! (Can always use my real camera if I care that much...).

I ended up making the decision to purchase in a relative short period as they were selling quickly - sold out by late afternoon on the Wednesday. Also first time I've ever purchased an extended warranty, given it was only $49 and is transferrable if I sell the phone - so even if I end up not loving it I reckon I won't lose too much on it. (Phones from the P9 forward have a two year warranty, whereas the Mate 8 is only one, so extending it to three made sense.)

It seems like NL's is developing a pattern of doing great run-out prices on Huawei product - I purchased a P8 for my wife a few months back for $349 (or even cheaper?)... but then again perhaps it's all just a means to get their 'phone home to Beijing" software in our hot little hands?!

Hope you are happy with it. I still am. I had sorted some photos to upload but not had a chance to try get uploaded :(. Overall I use for facebook and family snaps with zero issues. Night is ok at best, outdoors great which is normal for a cellphone.

I got mine at Parallel Import for $499 2 weeks before Noel Lemming had them for $439, it would appear both have raised their prices since but I suspect with the imminent arrival of the Mate 9 they will soon be back on sale somewhere

I'm in the UK this week, will be using the Mate 9 full time. So far it seems pretty fast and the larger screen is really sharp. Shame larger phones (not only this one) don't fit on a back pocket, but we can live with that. So far impressed with battery life too.

I am told the model sold in New Zealand will be dual SIM (SIM1 = 4G/3G/2G, SIM2 = 3G/2G). The one I have is dual SIM and you can select which SIM to be used for mobile data.

Good to hear that you're enjoying it. Early impressions of the camera?

From the above I assume that SIM2 will not do 3G at the same time as SIM 1??

It will, Mate 9 is a go for 2x Spark/Skinny SIMs.

Joins the relatively short list of phones which do that - ASUS ZenFone 3 range, OnePlus 3, LG V20 - and is the first to do so without a Snapdragon processor.
