Like most people I have unlimited local SMS. But I pay for international. Does this method still use my SMS allocation or will international SMS cost? Otherwise I would stick to my usual messaging apps.

Using this method you're still actually sending the SMS from your phone, nothing changes in that regard. You're still using your allocation / paying your provider, just like you would sending from the SMS app on your phone (this one). This interface merely effectively links your browser to your SMS app via the interwebs.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

Deal breaker for me is that the connection isn't persistent and I have to keep connecting to my PC.

You only have to open the https://messages.android.com/ web page - as long as you have told it to remember/stay connected it just re-connects (for me).

I'm liking it - use sms quite a bit and being able to read and type them on a desktop is way better for me.

However... on the handset, I can't see how to attach a vCard contact?

I found I can share a contact from the contacts app, pick messages as the app and it creates a message with the contact attached. I couldn't see any way of doing this starting from the message itself.

Seems like an omission to me.
