I have the 2degrees contract with me along with a new sim card which I just signed up from NL for a S10 128GB.

The handset cost is reduced from $1499 to $1298 ($201 discount) minus the $29 upfront payment they need as per their terms listed here making the cost of the handset balance to be paid as $1269.

On the contract I signed, the total MRO (mobile repayment option) payment remaining is $1269. The terms are here. It does not mention anything about S10 but there is mention of iPhone 7, iPhone SE/6, Samsung S7, Samsung S7 Edge, Samsung S7 Edge Pearl.

I have legally signed to pay $1269 in full should I wish to cancel the plan that I took with the deal. The plan cancellation conditions are here.

There is absolutely no mention of paying back the $201 discount they gave me on the handset if I cancel the plan.

I should technically be able to do that right away (not saying I would).

However there is a charge of 1.75% credit card fee (here) for paying the outstanding balance via credit card which is understandable.

Yes, you keep the discount. The plan is open. The term is just noted to confirm how much time you would like to pay the phone over. If you leave before the term, you just pay the final month of your plan plus the remaining balance of the phone.

May I know why you went with NL rather than PBTech?

There is mention of paying back the discount when you delve deeper into their T&C:

Interest Free Mobile Repayment Option Terms and Conditions.

Clause 10. If you terminate your MRO eligible Plan you must immediately pay us the balance outstanding on your MRO (if any).

Clause 13. The immediate repayment of the balance outstanding on your MRO triggered in accordance with clauses 10 and 11 will be in addition to any early termination charges or plan transfer charges that may be applicable to your Plan. For the avoidance of doubt the balance outstanding on your MRO will be the price of the eligible mobile device and any accessory (at the time of sign up to the MRO) plus any discount repayable in accordance with clause 17, minus any handset subsidy, your upfront payment on the MRO and any MRO monthly repayments received by 2degrees.

Any reason why the Galaxy Buds cost so much more here?

I watched a couple of reviews and the US price is USD130 (NZD188). The adverts here for the bundles give the price at NZD299 which is quite a lot higher.

I watched a couple of reviews and the US price is USD130 (NZD188). The adverts here for the bundles give the price at NZD299 which is quite a lot higher.

Fair point, applying the confirmed S10 pricing (USD 900/NZD 1,350) - if they applied the same to the buds they would be NZD $195.

Given this, I fully expect the buds price to fall steeply shortly after launch.

Given this, I fully expect the buds price to fall steeply shortly after launch.

Given how many they are giving away with phones those buds will be hitting TM in mass when the S10 is launched. I expect the price to be at max half the pretend RRP ($150) so plan on picking a set up.

If it was a bad business plan and wasn't benefitting them they wouldn't be offering it, but this isn't the first time they've had this deal.

I bought an iPhone XS and an iPhone XR using this same deal last year, paid the full balance one hit with no repayment of the discount needed, After paying I could have cancelled the plan but they were also doing double data back then so have kept it because of my data bank. I guess 2Degree plan on most people either needing the full term to pay back the cost of the device, or, are to lazy to cancel the plan, or, don't realise you can game them to get a discounted phone for little effort, or, end up liking the plan and stay on it (like me).

Absolutely, most people don't have the cash to pay the phone off so just keep making payments. I paid mine off eventually but kept being a 2 degrees customer because they seem to offer a better deal than the other telcos. I switched for the discount but stayed for the cheaper data and free hour unlimited per day. Doesn't sound like a rort to me.

Dont forget to add the tax as well. USA has a habit of charging tax on top of the price tags. So + 15% for NZ GST. + import fees whatever they may. I would still expect the buds to be maybe $249 or something. There is an overcharge of at least $50 which I assume they have for those 25% off sales

They would have looked at customer retention of such deals and determined whether it was worth it.

It is a risk when discounted phones are available on open terms but that is what a competitive market does for consumers. I am sure theres a reason why vodafone is not available at a few retailers like PBTech, deals like these are strategic as well.

I think you are all confusing the real price with the RRP. The RRP is on the sticker so that when you pay the real price you feel like you are getting a good deal and because some people don't care about discounts so pay the real price. Marketing 101.
