awojtas: Is there any forum to ask 2degrees when they'll roll out the fixed ASE6 firmware for the S10?

It's really best to ask Samsung these questions, even if the answer is "When HQ get to it in the queue." Small market + per-telco software builds = not being the absolute #1 global priority for fairly understandable reasons.

Samsung roll out the OTAs, it is up to them to provide the NZ telcos with the software for certification prior to release, and it goes back to Samsung to release once that certification is obtained - usually just a couple of days at the telcos' ends. If software needs to be rebuilt because another region found a bug, it needs to go through the local testing again. This is for the likes of emergency calling and broadcasts. Thankfully the customisations made for the NZ market are minor and in the scheme of things we don't do too badly for OTA rollouts these days, but sooner is always more desirable* eh?

*For enthusiasts, less so for the average punter who just wants their phone to work and hates updates with a violent burning passion thanks to Microsoft circa XP.

Ta much for the informative reply. When I bought my P30 Pro, your staff at PBTech Wellington were super and very helpful. Sadly Huawei isn't such a good choice nowadays, and the P30 Pro camera has so much potential but often requires lots of work processing the photos in Lightroom to make them pleasant.

I ended up flashing ASE6 via Odin, no wipe needed.

If anyone's interested:
- Take out your simcard and power off.
- Download the Frija tool from XDA, enter SM-G973F as the model number, and AUT as CSC (not your real one - e.g. mine was NZC).
- Download ASE6 (about 4GB), unzip.
- Press vol down + bixby, then plug in the USB cable while holding the buttons for 10 sec.
- Use Odin to flash, make sure you select HOME_CSC file for the CSC option.
- After first boot up, put your simcard back in.

ASE6 has some nice camera improvements for night mode and live focus.

Does it add any carrier apps or anything stupid. I haven't played around with samsung firmware since the s3 days

Although I would ultimately prefer that updates be globally synchronised, Samsung deserves enormous credit for making it easy to sideload and change regions should folks get impatient, especially when other brands are getting more and more locked down.

As a comparison, with the Huawei P30 Pro you can't do in-place upgrades without a wipe. Either it's OTA no-wipe so plenty of waiting for your carrier to approve, or via USB OTG adapter with full wipe.

No, it's vanilla. Aside from the new camera improvements you won't be able to tell that it's different. There's no extra apps from either Samsung or the carrier. There's no carrier logos either.

The only thing I've heard may be affected is using Samsung Pay, but I don't use it, so I can't tell.

riztricted: Has anyone taken off their factory screen protector. I've got a scratch on the protector. (Not sure how), thinking of just taking it off & going without one. Just wanting to know if anyones been brave enough to go that route.

I was in the USA a couple of weeks ago and passed a Samsung Store in a mall. I popped in as I had some scratches on the installed screen protector.

They sold me another - an Invisible Shield Ultra Clear. They suggested that was their 'approved' aftermarket unit.

I fitted it a few days ago and it went on pretty easily. I am usually a klutz at that sort of thing but this went on smoothly and with no dramas. It's fine - very clear although a tad glossy and slightly more friction than the Samsung one. The Samsung one was a very thin sheet of plastic film though.

I'm forever stuffing phones in pockets with keys and coins etc so I won't go without one. Gorilla Glass is way too soft.

Anyone got the latest update that's meant to drastically improve night mode on the camera?

I have the update that gives "night mode" manual toggle. Not sure if this is the update you mean.

It does NOT improve night mode on the camera. It allows to you manually decide to toggle night mode. It is basically useless when compared to Huawei. It does improve image somewhat when night mode is toggled but does not allow you to "see" in low light situation.

No not that one. There's been another one that's meant to greatly improve the Exynos camera overall and allow night mode to be used with Ultra wide lens too.

I got that overnight. Didn't change anything noticeable.

I updated manually using Frija to find the firmware (CSC: AUT, version: ASE7), Odin to flash and HOME_CSC so that it didn't wipe my data.

The night mode is indeed better than previously and it's handy to have the wide angle camera available.
I think the night mode is useful in brighter light as it helps counteract the blurry edges that the highly distorted wide angle lens seems to gift every photo with.

I've also got a P30 Pro to compare with, and yes the P30 Pro is amazing for certain conditions, but that RYYB sensor in the P30 Pro is a curse and no amount of their software updates is ever going to fix it. The P30 Pro's night mode may let in a huge amount of light but the S10 will nail the correct colours every time, whereas the P30 Pro will blow your reds and yellows out that no amount of tweaking in software later can fix it.

If someone cares I have direct comparison photos of S10 vs P30 Pro night mode using the latest firmware on both and can upload here.
